Teen Services Librarian

Idea Exchange is a community hub comprised of the public libraries and art galleries for the City of Cambridge, a thriving city with a rich architectural heritage and the second largest community within the Waterloo Region. We are committed to supporting and inspiring our community in the exploration of reading, arts, innovation, and learning.

As Teen Services Librarian, you will work with a team to provide information services to Idea Exchange members as well as staff and students at St. Benedict Catholic Secondary School. You will help our members learn about and navigate library and community resources, and create and implement innovative teen programming when required.

What You'll Do

As Teen Services Librarian, you will:

• Provide comprehensive support to library members, including answering inquiries, offering guidance on research, assisting with technology use, and managing circulation tasks.
• Create and maintain content for the St. Benedict CSS website in alignment with Waterloo Catholic District School Board guidelines under the direction of the Manager.
• Collaborate with school staff to plan and execute outreach events to promote Idea Exchange, enhancing its visibility and engagement.
• Deliver bibliographic instruction, curate age-appropriate resources, and develop engaging programming tailored to teen's interests and curriculum requirements.
• Embrace digital resources, e-books, and online databases, staying updated on educational trends, and teach information literacy skills to students and staff.
• Evaluate library materials, monitor budget expenditures, and assist in addressing inappropriate behavior, while actively contributing to policy development and engaging in creative displays to promote library resources.
• Answer reference questions, recommend reading material, and instruct members on the use of library equipment and other new technologies
• In the absence of the Branch Manager, act as a Person-In-Charge for the building
• Perform daily branch activities such as registering new members and cash transactions
• Assist with branch collection management
• Assist with adult programming and group tours

What You'll Need to Succeed

To be qualified for and successful in the role, you should have:

• Required - University Masters in Library Information Science or Information Studies
• Required - Previous public library experience: 1 year
• Required - Experience working with youth in a work environment - 1 year
• Required - Previous experience working with the public in a service environment: 1 year
• Strong communication skills and member-focused service mentality.
• Proficiency in website content management and digital resources.
• Ability to collaborate effectively with school staff and promote library initiatives.
• Expertise in information literacy, technology, and curriculum-based resource selection.
• Keen organizational skills for administrative tasks
• Ability to monitor budget expenditures.
• Creative and adaptable, with a passion for promoting library resources and programs.
• Ability to apply critical thinking and problem-solving skills

Pay : Salary range: $64,578 to $78,507 per year.

Hours : 70 hours in a two-week period.

Schedule : working various day, evening, and weekend shifts

The position may require work from multiple branch locations within Cambridge.

The regular schedule is as follows and is subject to change. A temporary starting schedule may be assigned.

Monday to Friday 8:00am to 4:00pm

*During the summer months and when St. Benedict C.S.S is closed, these hours will change to include days (9:30a.m. - 5:30 p.m.), 1 evening per week and rotational weekends.

Note: schedules are service-driven and as such are subject to change.
