Auxiliary status employees will be paid an additional 15% in lieu of vacation, holiday, sick leave beyond the statutory requirement, and other benefits, per the CUPE Local 50 Collective Agreement.

POSITION FUNCTION
Develop and implement plans for the preservation, conservation and restoration of natural park areas.

KEY DUTIES
Develop, maintain and implement the Natural Areas Management Plan. Create and maintain records of rare and endangered species and ecosystems; coordinate the collection of seeds, propagation and reintroduction of these plant species; research, introduce and monitor new management techniques for the maintenance of natural ecosystems and for the prevention and control of invasive species. Research, create, plan, implement and evaluate programs for natural areas and cultural history.

Facilitate community involvement and promote awareness of conservation and environmental issues to municipal staff and the public by conducting nature walks, field outings and associated activities. Develop and present educational and training programs for staff, public and school groups. Work with staff and community groups in planning and implementation of invasive species removal, vegetation control, natural areas restoration and management and other cooperative programs.

Work with staff to prepare input to community plans regarding natural conservation issues.  Respond to inquiries and provide advice to staff, the public and outside agencies relating to joint activities. Develop policies and procedures related to natural areas. Attend public and interest-group meetings to provide information about and participation in conservation and associated ecosystem issues. Select, coordinate, monitor and review the work of consultants and contractors as required.

Prepare grant proposals and work with groups to fundraise for support of natural areas; assist in preparing the budget for this area. Prepare reports and submissions to publications or for promotional purposes as required.

Perform related duties where qualified.

INDEPENDENCE
Work is generated through supervisor, legislation, annual objectives, Division initiatives, and in response to the needs of the Department.
Work is reviewed through reports and discussions with supervisor.
New initiatives, controversial issues, major expenditures and policy development are discussed with supervisor.

KEY SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Organize and prioritize work.
Understand and apply the principles, methods and techniques of natural resource management.
Working level operation of current City of Victoria word processing, spreadsheet and related specialty programs.
Interpret related policies, guidelines and legislation.
Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Deal effectively with the public and outside agencies.    
Work safely on work sites.

QUALIFICATIONS
Formal Education, Training and Occupational Certification:
High school graduation.
Technical School diploma in Natural Resource Management, Environmental Education, Environmental Studies or related field.  (2 years)
Current and valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence.
Experience:
3 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

OTHER:
May be requested to substitute in a more senior position.
