CNC Technician

Position Summary

The CNC Technician is responsible for the CNC machining operations that produce safety-critical powertrain components in a high-volume automotive manufacturing environment. The role is the primary technical resource for multiple Mazak Vertical Machining Centers with 4th-axis capability, and for the dual-turret CNC lathes being added, all with robotic machine tending. The CNC Technician owns machine setup, process control, troubleshooting, tooling, preventive maintenance and continuous improvement, and drives equipment reliability, dimensional conformity, process capability and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE).

Key Responsibilities

CNC Machining & Production Support

• Set up, operate, troubleshoot and optimize Mazak Vertical Machining Centers and CNC turning equipment.
• Create, modify and troubleshoot EIA/ISO G-code programs.
• Perform machine prove-outs, setup verification and first-off approvals.
• Monitor process stability and keep machining operations within established process controls.
• Support production teams in meeting safety, quality, delivery and productivity targets.

Tooling & Process Control

• Set up and manage cutting tools using tool presetting equipment, and maintain tooling standards and tool life controls.
• Adjust offsets, tool compensation and machining parameters to keep parts dimensionally compliant.
• Investigate process variation, implement corrective actions, and drive cycle time, tool life and throughput improvements.

Quality & Automotive Compliance

• Interpret engineering drawings, customer specifications and process documentation, and apply GD&T during setup, troubleshooting and validation.
• Meet the quality requirements for safety-critical powertrain components and maintain capability on critical characteristics.
• Support APQP, PFMEA, Control Plans, Layered Process Audits and customer quality initiatives as required.
• Take part in root cause analysis and corrective action for machining-related concerns.

Automation, Workholding & Equipment Reliability

• Support and troubleshoot robotic machine loading and unloading systems.
• Maintain and improve machining fixtures, hydraulic workholding and part-locating systems, and support new fixture development.
• Perform preventive maintenance on CNC equipment, keep equipment records current, and help eliminate recurring failures.
• Coordinate machine repairs and external service support when necessary.

Continuous Improvement

• Lead improvements in machine uptime, OEE, scrap reduction and process capability, using Lean Manufacturing methods.
• Support new product launches, program transfers and process development.
• Develop and maintain setup sheets, tooling documentation and standardized work instructions.

Safety & Compliance

• Work to IATF 16949 and ISO 14001 requirements and all Company safety procedures.
• Comply with the Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), WHMIS and WSIB requirements, and keep the work area clean and organized.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years of CNC machining experience in an automotive or high-volume manufacturing environment.
• Direct experience with Mazak Vertical Machining Centers and 4th-axis machining applications.
• Experience with CNC turning equipment; dual-turret lathe experience is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of EIA/ISO G-code programming and troubleshooting.
• Proficient in cutting tool setup and management using tool presetters, with a strong understanding of tooling, feeds, speeds and machining optimization.
• Able to read and interpret engineering blueprints and technical specifications, with working knowledge of GD&T.
• Strong understanding of tool offsets and compensation, dimensional control, statistical process stability and root cause problem solving.
• Experience with machining fixtures and hydraulic workholding, and with performing and documenting preventive maintenance.
• Able to work weekday and weekend overtime with minimal supervision to meet customer requirements, and to work effectively with other team members.
• Experience supporting robotic machine tending systems is a strong asset.

• OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness): above 85% on all equipment.
• FTT (First Time Through): above 95% on all equipment.
• Tooling: tooling cost and tool life performance.
• Equipment: machine uptime and reliability.
• Continuous improvement: support plant initiatives to reach plant goals.

Responsibilities and Working Conditions

Under the general direction of the ME Supervisor, the CNC Technician works independently and confers regularly with division and corporate employees, contractors, customers and suppliers. Travel and overtime may be required to meet customer expectations. A valid driver's license and passport are required for travel. The role works in a manufacturing plant environment and will be exposed to some elements such as temperature and noise.

Compensation

$65,000 to $90,000 per year
