The Institute for Management and Innovation’s Master of Urban Innovation has the following Sessional Lecturer position available for the Fall 2026 term and invites applications from suitably qualified candidates who are not current University of Toronto students. Course Title: MUI1020H – Civic Engagement and Economics Development
Class Schedule: Tuesdays 6:30PM – 9:30PM (tentative)
Dates of Appointment: September 8 th , 2026– December 23 rd , 2026
Description of Course: This course provides an overview and critical analysis of core constructs used to understand the role of civic engagement in economic and community development. Beginning with theoretical constructs, policy contexts, and spatial dimensions of community and economic development, we examine the challenges and prospects for meeting both local economic growth and social equity objectives at the local and regional scale. Shifting to the process of engaging the community and broader civic organizations, we examine the methods, strategies and tactics involved, focusing on planning, implementation and management activities. We conclude with an examination of the way new methods of civic engagement are contributing to community and economic development practice and the various approaches and programs offering ‘on the ground’ prospects for integrating community and economic development goals. The primary objective of this course is to encourage students to understand the relationship between the theory, process and actual practice of community and economic development and to identify key themes, cross-cutting challenges, and opportunities for innovation.
Position Description: All normal duties related to the design, teaching and delivery of a University credit course including: weekly lectures. Meeting with student teams to guide/advise them on their assignments. Holding weekly office hours. Marking/evaluating all student assignments; recording student attendance; recording and submitting grades; and communicating with students on course related matters. Building and maintaining Quercus course shell. Design course syllabus, content and assignments in close consultation with Program Director. Liaise with Program Director regarding course content and curriculum.
Minimum Qualifications: Ph.D. (geography, planning, political science or related field). Demonstrates industry, government, and/or public policy experience in domains related to course content.
Preferred Qualifications: Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II and Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12.
Salary (half course): Minimum $9997.47 as per CUPE 3902 Unit 3 Collective Agreement (includes 4% vacation pay).
