Hatch is currently seeking a  Piping Superintendent  to join our Project Delivery Group (PDG) in our Project Management and Construction business unit.   This role is based in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.

Reporting to the Construction Manager, you will be responsible for the planning, organization and direction of construction and related activities within an assigned area of responsibility on a project. As part of the EPCM site construction management team, you will work closely with Health and Safety personnel, other discipline superintendents and supervisors, Field Engineering, Quality Assurance and Commissioning teams to deliver the Project. You will also support the Project Controls and Contracts team as needed for progress and contract management. 

The Piping Superintendent must be a competent person in the construction trade, taking all the necessary measures to ensure the works performed by contractors are undertaken safely, executed to the prescribed quality standards, comply with the Contract and Regulatory requirements and meet project objectives.

This position requires the ability to meet the physical requirements needed to work in the field to manage the ongoing construction under various field conditions, including work areas where Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR) are required.

In this role, you will: 

• Champion a strong safety culture of zero-harm by working proactively with contractors to promote safe and hazard free work and ensuring work is conducted in compliance with Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) legislation, Project policies and procedures;
• Support the Health and Safety Manager and safety advisors to ensure a safe working site, abiding by all company and project safety rules and applicable legislation;
• Perform duties in a spirit of mutual trust and cooperation with the Client, the EPCM team and the Contractor, to the highest professional standards;
• Manage personnel and construction activities within the assigned area, providing mentoring and clear leadership to ensure the team works to prescribed processes and requirements;
• Participate in the overall management, coordination and direction of construction contractors’ activities, collaborating with other supervisors and disciplines;
• Become fully conversant with the Contract drawings, specifications and commercial details to ensure that the works are constructed or installed in accordance with the Contract;
• Advise senior management of potential problems, work interferences and schedule difficulties while assisting in resolving conflicts.
• Coordinate with client's representatives on jobsite activities and interfaces with client operations as required within assigned area of operations.

Key Responsibilities:

• Contribute to the management of safety on site including the safety of the site work force, permanent works and property;
• Monitoring the Contractor to ensure that proper processes are identified and implemented to achieve the required quality compliance;
• Monitor the technical requirements around the mechanical and piping systems;
• Ensure that all construction activities are well planned, coordinated, prioritized, and make best use of the available resources;
• Ensure that Construction Work Packages (CWPs) are executed to the prescribed quality standard, comply with design/specifications, and completed within the project cost and schedule requirements;
• Conduct jobsite coordination meetings (e.g. LEAN Meeting), attend daily contractor toolbox meetings, weekly progress meetings with the contractors and safety meetings;
• Provide guidance, assistance and advice to the contractors on all construction matters;
• Review scope methodologies and safety documentation in accordance with the Project Safe Work Procedures, Standards, Guidelines and Notices;
• Check directly, or indirectly through discipline supervisors/coordinators, the work carried out, trades and resources, materials and quality of work;
• Review and validate Contractor labor, equipment and material (LEMs) submittals;
• Review and endorse contractor daily production reports, document any delays;
• Prepare and issue daily construction reports, reporting on safety, direct scope, delays, etc.
• Work closely with Field Engineering to ensure work complies with and meets prescribed quality standards;
• Provide input into engineering solutions to resolve site queries and coordinate resolution;
• Review and comment on the ITPs/Material Approvals and Method Statements;
• Inspect installations, witness hold points, ensure contractors meet quality requirements;
• Contribute to continuous improvement, best practice and lessons learned;
• Assist with Non-Conformance reporting and notification of corrective measures;
• Work closely with site planners/schedulers to monitor and report on progress and performance against contract schedule;
• Work closely with Project Controls for reporting, potential cost and schedule trends, and provide recommendations to the Construction Manager;
• Leads and directs the area team on completion and handover requirements, punch list generation/completion, systems completion and testing, as-built drawings, and coordinating with the pre-operational testing and commissioning team as required;

Qualifications and Experience:

• Technical degree or diploma in a construction or engineering related program, or Red Seal Journeyperson Certification as a pipefitter, steamfitter or similar.
• 15+ years of construction supervisory/management experience as a piping superintendent or similar role on mining, heavy industrial or oil and gas construction projects;
• Previous experience in Uranium process plants and brownfield construction is preferred.
• Demonstrated knowledge of safety and can demonstrate a Health, Safety, Environmental and Community focus in construction phase of project delivery;
• Able to understand and effectively interpret all elements within technical specifications and drawings;
• Demonstrated experience and understanding of Piping and Mechanical installations and the associated Quality requirements, including:
  • Piping systems installation and testing;
  • Mechanical systems installation and testing;
  • Supporting Steel structures;
  • Quality and completion systems;
  • Codes and regulations pertaining to safety, piping and mechanical systems.
• Sufficiently experienced in construction work packages and workface planning;
• Effective leadership, communication, negotiation, problem-solving, planning and organizational skills required to manage Contractors and foster a team environment;
• Advanced knowledge of various construction disciplines, safety regulations, scheduling, cost control, quality control and engineering drawings;
• Ability to manage, review and interpret data, specifications, drawings received from engineering, contractors and vendors;
• Ability to work under pressure, multi-task and meet deadlines and work in a fast-paced environment;
• Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with contractors and Company’s representatives to resolve field problems in a timely manner;
• The ability to quickly identify problem situations, evaluate alternative causes, produce workable solutions and lead a team to successful completion;
• Strong work planning experience with a proven ability to develop, maintain and execute both long term and short-term schedules;
• Efficient report-writing, communication and managerial skills;
• Proficient PC skills including a working knowledge of MS office suite;
• Ability to travel and work on domestic projects on a rotational basis, including remote fly-in / fly-out based projects.
• Possess a valid driver’s license.
