Chief Executive Officer & Registrar
CRNA
The College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) is the regulatory college responsible for protecting the public interest by supporting safe, competent and ethical nursing care across Alberta. Operating under the Health Professions Act, the CRNA maintains the register of regulated members, establishes and enforces professional standards and provides regulatory guidance to registrants. Guided by its vision of excellence in nursing regulation for the health of all Albertans, the College applies a Right-touch approach that is proportionate, targeted, accountable, consistent, transparent and agile. Its strategic direction emphasizes progressive culture, collaborative partnerships, responsible fiscal stewardship and organizational excellence, supported by an ongoing commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility (EDIA).
Reporting to Council, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) & Registrar will provide the strategic, regulatory, operational and cultural leadership required to advance the CRNA’s public protection mandate. With a strong emphasis on systems-level thinking and future-focused leadership, the CEO & Registrar will help position the CRNA to respond proactively to emerging trends in health care, regulation, workforce planning, technology and data-driven decision making.
Why This Role Matters
The CEO & Registrar will:
Exercise statutory authority, translate Council’s direction into integrated organizational priorities;
Ensure that regulatory programs and decisions are lawful, evidence-informed, procedurally fair and responsive to emerging risk;
Build a constructive governance partnership with Council;
Lead and develop a cohesive Senior Leadership Team;
Advance organizational performance and stewardship;
Represent the CRNA credibly with government, registrants, employers, educators, regulatory partners and the public;
Foster communication, transparency and trust between administration and Council.
Who the CRNA is Looking For
The ideal candidate is an accomplished executive with progressive senior leadership experience in professional regulation, health care, the public sector or another comparably complex environment. They will bring both strategic vision and practical credibility, ideally having first‑hand experience delivering care or leading within complex health‑care environments and understanding the realities faced daily by regulated professionals.
Eligible for nursing licensure in Alberta, this next leader will bring sophisticated knowledge of governance, administrative law, public‑interest decision making and the province’s health system, complemented by the strategic perspective to recognize connections across legislative, regulatory, workforce and organizational issues. Technology and data savvy, the ideal candidate will be comfortable leveraging analytics, evidence and emerging innovations to enhance regulatory effectiveness and organizational performance.
A principled and politically astute relationship builder, this leader will ensure best practices inside of the organization and provide Council with candid and balanced advice, exercise sound risk‑based judgment and communicate sensitive matters with clarity and credibility. They will be highly effective in managing complex stakeholder relationships provincially and nationally, synthesizing diverse perspectives into clear strategic direction. They will also be a courageous and inclusive people leader who develops organizational capacity, creates shared accountability and enables employees to challenge assumptions and pursue continual improvement.
This is a compelling opportunity to lead a consequential public‑interest organization at a time of continued evolution in nursing practice, health‑care delivery and professional regulation. Based in Edmonton, the incoming CEO & Registrar will have the mandate to advance modern Right‑touch regulation, strengthen public confidence and translate the CRNA’s strategic and EDIA commitments into measurable action. For a forward‑looking executive motivated by regulatory excellence, organizational transformation and meaningful system‑level impact, the role offers the opportunity to help shape the future of nursing regulation and contribute to the health and well‑being of Albertans.
We would like to acknowledge that the CRNA office is within Treaty 6 Territory and we recognize our members on Treaty 4, 6, 7, 8 and 10 and Métis Homelands. The CRNA is dedicated to improving Indigenous health and to supporting culturally safe and appropriate care to Indigenous patients and families in Alberta.
