Sr. Application Developer (Ingenium/COBOL) (Mahone Bay)

Roles & Responsibilities

• Conceive and write detailed software implementations/code while ensuring that their code/configurations adhere to security, logging, error handling, and performance standards and non‑functional requirements.
• Write, configure and integrate code to create software that aligns with requirements, architecture patterns and technology standards.
• Decompose business requirements and translate them into detailed design specifications and code.
• Design, develop, test, and maintain applications using COBOL and AS400 CLP.
• Assess the impact of design decisions on the product/service (performance, schedule, budget, downstream component/system impact, quality, etc.) and recommend alternate or creative solutions for mitigation/optimization if required.
• Analyze and optimize application systems, monitor, track, and enhance performance and address any issues (maintenance).
• Support production issues, including independently completing root‑cause analysis and diagnosis.
• Understand the implications of various components (including technology strategy & architecture) on the overall design of a program, system, or ecosystem.
• Lead detailed code reviews and provide constructive feedback.
• Design solutions, write code, perform unit testing, develop appropriate artefacts/documentation, and facilitate final delivery.
• Devise new algorithms and data structures for target environment and platform attributes in alignment with architectural patterns.
• Recommend or automate approaches to streamline and integrate technological processes and/or systems to improve operational efficiency and effectiveness.
• Support the management of specific project deliverables & outcomes.
• Work independently and regularly handle non‑routine situations.
• Perform unit, integration, and regression testing to verify functionality as per project requirements or the functionality of the mainframe systems.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of experience with IBM AS400 CLP, COBOL, in an Ingenium PAS workplace.
• Development experience in INGENIUM (versions 5.x – 7.x).
• Knowledge or related experience supporting life‑insurance applications.
• Knowledge of software development practices, concepts, and technology obtained through formal training and/or work experience.
• Knowledge of the technical/business environment and processes for life‑insurance products (whole life, term, disability, universal life, wealth, health).
• Hands‑on knowledge of INGENIUM product and business‑process functionality.
• Ability to create documentation using JIRA and Confluence.
• Ability to understand testing requirements, prepare test plans, write and execute test cases.
• Understanding of the underlying operating system, development environment, and deployment practices.
• Facility with the ecosystem in which code operates.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong collaboration and teamwork skills.
• Analytical and problem‑solving skills – in‑depth.

Salary: $75,900.00 – $141,900.00 (Salaried). The above represents BMO Financial Group’s pay range and type. Salaries may vary based on factors such as location, skills, experience, education, and qualifications for the role, and may include commission structure. Part‑time roles are paid pro‑rated. Compensation package may include performance‑based incentives, discretionary bonuses, and other perks and rewards.
