Monday to Friday, 4:00 pm to Midnight (75 hours bi-weekly)

Responsibilities

Performs a variety of routine laboratory procedures to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease in the Histology lab.

• Retrieve specimens from Specimen Processing and prepare them for accessioning.
• Open, separate, number, and arrange Histology specimens for laboratory examination and processing.
• Set up and operate laboratory equipment in preparation for processing specimens and for preparing and staining slides.
• Prepare chemical solutions as required.
• Maintain accurate records for all test and control results.
• Perform routine maintenance of laboratory equipment (daily, weekly, monthly) and document completion of each task on the appropriate form(s).
• Ensure all equipment is operating and appropriate QC is performed.
• Perform bench work according to daily schedule or as otherwise needed.
• Follow SOPs as per specific department manual for all procedures.
• Demonstrate procedures to newly hired Technologists, Technicians and other staff as necessary.
• Maintain confidentiality and accuracy of appropriate documents.
• Observe all safety precautions in the performance of all duties.
• Maintain a tidy and clean work area.
• Inform Lab Manager or Charge Technologist of all complaints made by physicians or patients.
• Perform other duties as required/assigned.

Qualifications

• Medical Laboratory Technologist registered in good standing with CSMLS & CMLTM.
• Medical terminology an asset.
• Experience working in Histology preferred.
• Previous experience with accessioning and processing Histology specimens is an asset.
• Microtomy, embedding and special stain experience preferred.
• Experience operating and maintaining laboratory equipment.
• Knowledge of Histology is an asset.
• Ability to function in a fast-paced workplace and take instruction from senior staff/supervisor/manager.
• Ability to multitask and work efficiently in a team environment is essential.
• Attention to detail is essential.
• Organizational skills are essential.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Experience in word processing preferred.
• Ability to work independently and within a group environment and be reliable/accountable for duties assigned.

This position requires a current satisfactory Criminal Records Check (including Vulnerable Sector Search), Child Abuse Registry Check and Adult Abuse Registry Check as conditions of employment. The successful candidate will be responsible for any service charges incurred. A security check is considered current if it was obtained no more than six months prior to the start of employment.
