Senior Electrical Engineer
Magna IV Engineering
Reporting to the Operations Manager – Engineering, the Electrical Engineer – Senior will be accountable for executing projects through sound engineering expertise and project management, engaging in relationship building activities with clients, and identifying opportunities for Magna IV Engineering. This role specifically focuses on solving problems involving power systems. The successful candidate will provide technical expertise, plan and execute projects, provide mentorship, coaching, and leadership to team members, and assist developing new business, ultimately providing exceptional client service through the completion of power systems projects.
Sectors served by Magna IV Engineering include power utilities, gas and oil industry, bulk material handling, pulp and paper, industrial substations, generation facilities, co‑generation units, and others.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Engineering & Design (~75% time commitment) – Performance of some or all of the following, at a level suitable for engineering authentication: low, medium and high voltage electrical design; design of industrial control schemes, development of control narratives, flex‑logic, and implementations of automatic power transfer schemes; technical report writing, authenticating, and final‑reviewing reports of others; electrical power system studies (load flow, short circuit, arc flash, motor starting, harmonic evaluation, grounding, etc.); protective relay setting development and relay setting file development; software assisted electrical studies: ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, EMTP, CDGES; application of knowledge of the Canadian Electrical Code C22.1 Part 1; application of knowledge of IEEE Standards related to medium and high voltage installations and studies; low, medium & high voltage switchgear design; medium & high voltage substation design; design of medium and high voltage protection systems (schematics and wiring); configuration of protective relays (SEL, GE, ABB, etc.); computation of complex relay settings and logic; support for development of proposals and estimates for areas of practice; excellent English communication, written and verbal.
- Project Management/Support (~15% time commitment) – Oversee all aspects of assigned projects, plan resources, manage projects ranging in values from approximately $10,000 to $500,000, complete all deliverables, assign staff responsibilities, maintain strong communication with the client, ensure safe work processes, ensure work is properly executed, on time, within budgets, completion of reports, invoicing, maintain acceptable profit margins.
- Client Management and Business Development (~10% time commitment) – Identify and seek out leads, coordinate activities with Marketing, actively network at trade shows, collaborate with senior staff, foster strong client relationships, identify opportunities for proposals, develop proposals based on audits, interact with clients professionally.
- People Leadership – Manage performance of any project‑assigned personnel, mentor staff, identify and develop personnel, support employee engagement practices.
- Success Measurements – Successful completion of engineering projects with minimal errors, hours and budget management, ability to coach and mentor others.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Minimum 7 years’ experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering (minimum).
- Licensed (P.Eng.) in British Columbia (EGBC).
- Ability to perform electrical engineering design and studies independently and competently.
- Experience and working knowledge of ETAP, SKM, EasyPower, EMTP, CDGES or equivalent software tools.
- Capability to design power systems including engineering and specification development for switchgear, motor control centers, transformers, cables, trays, e‑houses, distribution centers, protection and control elements.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel within Alberta.
- Ability to multi‑task, exercise good judgment and prioritize workload through outstanding organizational skills.
- Broad knowledge in industrial, utility and commercial environments.
- Capability to create protective relay program setting files in a variety of software platforms; bench‑configuring relays is an asset.
- Strong leadership skills, positive attitude, highly self‑motivated, energetic, passionate and reliable.
- Dedicated to providing exceptional client experiences to internal and external clients.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with adept relationship management skills.
- Proven commitment to safety.
- Willingness to travel and work flexible shifts, including occasional weekends, evenings and statutory holidays.
- Ability to work in office, industrial sites, and home office.
- Willingness to work on an hourly basis with an average full‑time workload.
