Water and Wastewater Technician - Full Time

DEFINITION:

Under the direction of a Working Foreman, operates and maintains the Sewage Treatment Plant, Water Treatment systems and associated pumping facilities. Water and Wastewater Technicians will perform tasks of varying levels of difficulty depending on the skills and certifications held. Senior Technicians with high levels of certifications will be expected to assist with the responsibilities of the Water and Wastewater Foreman

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED AT BASE RATE:

1. Perform preventative maintenance, and repair, install and calibrate equipment related to water production, treatment and delivery, and sewage collection (equipment includes, but not limited to, pumps, chlorinator, fluoridator, monitoring equipment, pressure reducing valves, telemetering, standby generator, air valves, confined space gas monitor, compressors and fans);
2. Perform laboratory tests to monitor levels of chlorine, fluoride, bacteria, etc., in the City's water system, Sewage Treatment Plant, and assist with more complicated testing;
3. Inspect and maintain lift stations, pump houses, blower building, water meters, reservoirs, emergency generators, aeration lagoon, etc., on a regular basis;
4. Prepare and maintain daily operational records and reports of water treatment and sewage treatment facilities;
5. Interpret meter readings and test results to make corrective adjustments to systems;
6. Calculate velocities, flows and volumes, etc., as required;
7. Maintain weather records on behalf of Environment Canada;
8. Clean various grit chambers, lift stations, etc., on a regular basis;
9. Perform housekeeping and janitorial duties, as required;
10. Emergency call outs and shift work may be required;
11. Other duties, as required.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

1. Secondary school graduation;
2. Environmental Operator's Certification Program (EOCP)Certification in Water Distribution, Wastewater Collection, Wastewater Treatment, or chlorine handling is an asset;
3. Minimum two years' related experience;
4. Confined space and basic rescue training an asset;
5. Mechanical aptitude and ability to make repairs to pumping and mechanical equipment;
6. Ability to interpret and apply requirements set forth in the various permits issued by the Ministry of Health and Ministry of Environment;
7. Ability to perform advanced mathematical calculations;
8. Good working knowledge of chemicals handled on the job;
9. Attention to detail and accuracy in recording data and maintaining records;
10. Ability to deal effectively with co-workers and the public;
11. Ability to work independently to accomplish tasks and assignments
12. Good written and oral communication skills;
13. Valid Class 5 B.C. Driver's Licence.

WAGE AND CERTIFICATION RATES:

The Water and Wastewater Technician will have the base rate of $37.11 (new wage) with wage increases tied to the achievement of additional certifications and the corresponding increase in responsibilities associated with each certification level. See " Appendix A" for additional responsibilities associated with each certificate-based wage increase.

• Water Distribution I - $0.90 Wastewater Treatment I - $0.90
• Water Distribution II – $1.45 Chlorine Handling – $1.25
• Water Distribution III - $1.45 Backflow Tester - $0.25
• Wastewater Collection I - $0.90
• Wastewater Collection II- $1.45
