Director, Tax

Purpose of Role

The purpose of this role is to contribute value to the Company’s overall business strategy through effective tax planning, to ensure that the Company is in compliance with tax laws including tax return filings, to communicate and manage tax risks and audits and to ensure timely and accurate preparation of the consolidated tax provision and notes for external financial reporting.

Role Accountabilities

  • Tax Compliance Management: Design and implement robust tax compliance processes to ensure full adherence to tax laws in every country of operation. You will oversee the timely and accurate filing of all returns, including the performance of detailed return-to-provision variance analysis.
  • Transfer Pricing & Structure: Ensure all intercompany cross-border transactions are supported by compliant transfer pricing documentation.
  • Tax Financial Reporting & Disclosure: Lead the end-to-end financial reporting process for taxation. This includes preparing accurate external financial tax reporting that meets the needs of investors and analysts, ensuring complete disclosure in documents like ESTMA, CSR, and Management Information Circulars, and conducting detailed reviews to identify and correct any reporting errors.
  • Strategic Advisory & Leadership: Act as the primary liaison with external auditors to facilitate positive assurance engagements. You will provide quarterly and annual analysis to the Audit Committee via dashboard deliverables, providing clear explanations for tax charge variances and updates on the global tax risk environment.
  • Tax Audits & Control Environment: Manage all revenue authority audits, tax litigation, and information requests. You will coordinate appropriate responses with legal entity officers and the Delegation of Tax Authority while maintaining a strict internal control environment compliant with SOX regulations.
  • Tax Planning, Transactions & M&A Support: Provide expert tax advice related to due diligence, capital raising, and the structuring of acquisitions. You will identify and implement global tax planning initiatives, ensuring all relevant strategies are supported by recognized third-party tax opinions.
  • Integrated Forecasting & Ad-hoc Support: Partner with the Financial Planning and Analysis function to provide tax input for corporate models, ensuring they accurately project future taxes, impairment computations, and the implications of legislative changes. You will also provide ad-hoc support for indirect taxes, contract reviews, and marketing/sales functions.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Post-secondary degree University degree and professional accounting designation, CPA, CA.
  • Completion of CICA In-depth income tax course, Parts I, II, and III.
  • Minimum of ten (10) years of relevant tax experience.
  • Expert level knowledge of Canadian corporate income tax.
  • Experience with managing financial statement audits and strong understanding of audit methodology as it pertains to the corporate income tax environment.
  • Experience with managing complex Canadian corporate income tax return filings for multinational organizations.
  • Experience with corporate reorganizations, transactional tax, domestic and cross-border tax planning.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Tax experience in Resource Extraction sectors preferred.
  • Expert knowledge of Canadian domestic, international and mining taxation.
  • Expert level knowledge in the application of IFRS tax accounting concepts.
  • Strong working knowledge of domestic and cross border taxation with a focus on Canadian foreign affiliate rules.
  • Experience with complex tax planning from a domestic and cross border perspective. Knowledge of M&A taxation preferred.
  • Understanding of international tax systems in the USA and Peru as well as an understanding of the operation and function of Canada’s tax treaty network.
  • Experience with managing financial statement audits for large multinational organizations. Understanding of audit methodology as it pertain to taxation is required.
  • Experience in dealing with complex Canadian corporate income tax return filings as part of a large multinational corporate group.
  • Understanding of indirect taxation.
  • Highly skilled with Excel.
  • Excellent people skills to be used in building constructive working relationships across the boundaries of the Hudbay organization, characterized by a high level of acceptance, cooperation and mutual respect.
  • Exceptional tax research skills and strong experience with documenting technical tax positions and formal tax memorandums.
  • Strong analytical skills; able to discern large amounts of information and focus on the critical issues.
  • Respect for confidential information.

Travel

Expected to travel to all Hudbay locations. Travel will vary depending on initiatives and projects and, assuming no travel restrictions, the percentage can range from a minimum of 15% to 25% per year.

Working Arrangements

Role is eligible flexible work arrangements, allowing you to balance 50% of your time in the office with 50% time working remotely.
