• Pay Rate: $80.05 - $100.00/hour, depending on experience
• Contract Length: 52 weeks
• Location: Burnaby, British Columbia
• Schedule: Full-time, 5 days/week

Note: The primary pay rate is based on T4 classification; however, we will also consider applications from candidates interested in an INC classification, where applicable.

Description

We are currently hiring a Senior Structural Engineer to support structural engineering projects and operations within a complex utility environment.

The successful candidate will provide professional engineering expertise across structural assessment, design, rehabilitation, construction support, field investigations, and technical problem-solving. The role will involve working with reinforced concrete, structural steel, timber, and utility infrastructure while ensuring engineering solutions meet applicable codes, standards, safety requirements, and professional practice guidelines.

This role requires a highly experienced engineer who can work independently, provide sound technical judgment, collaborate across multidisciplinary teams, engage with contractors and stakeholders, and take responsibility for engineering deliverables and field solutions.

Responsibilities

• Develop safe and practical structural engineering solutions for medium-complexity projects and operations.
• Perform structural assessments, investigations, designs, rehabilitation studies, and construction support activities.
• Design and assess reinforced concrete, structural steel, and timber structures.
• Evaluate existing structures and field conditions and develop appropriate engineering solutions.
• Provide technical engineering support during construction and field activities.
• Serve as Professional of Record (PoR) where required and provide professional engineering oversight.
• Review engineering designs, drawings, specifications, calculations, and technical documentation.
• Conduct independent engineering studies and analysis to resolve technical and field engineering problems.
• Interpret engineering specifications, codes, standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.
• Support project and operations management in meeting safety, cost, quality, and schedule objectives.
• Review construction activities, staging, temporary works, excavation support systems, and constructability requirements.
• Recommend changes to plans, designs, and estimated costs where required.
• Prepare progress reports, technical reports, engineering documentation, and recommendations.
• Coordinate work schedules and support contractor activities.
• Review contractor work and provide technical recommendations related to completed work.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering, construction, project management, and operations teams.
• Engage effectively with contractors, authorities, and other project stakeholders.
• Support engineering quality management, document control, records management, and technical reviews.
• Provide guidance and technical advice to other engineering professionals and project team members.
• Apply sound engineering judgment to select appropriate methods, designs, and solutions.
• Ensure engineering work complies with applicable professional practice and quality management requirements.
• Support the development and improvement of engineering standards, processes, and practices.
• Conduct field investigations and assessments as required.
• Participate in project planning, feasibility studies, preliminary design, detailed design, and implementation activities.

Qualifications

• Minimum 8 years of structural engineering experience in Canada or equivalent relevant experience.
• Demonstrated experience in structural assessment, design, rehabilitation, and construction support.
• Strong experience designing reinforced concrete, structural steel, and timber structures.
• Strong working knowledge of applicable structural codes, standards, and engineering practices.
• Experience assessing field conditions and developing practical engineering solutions.
• Experience with construction staging, temporary works, excavation support systems, and constructability reviews.
• Experience using structural analysis and design software such as S-Frame, SAP2000, STAAD, or comparable tools.
• Strong understanding of construction practices within the utilities or infrastructure industry in British Columbia.
• Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
• Strong verbal and written English communication skills, including technical report writing.
• Ability to communicate effectively with contractors, project teams, and regulatory officials.
• Strong understanding of field safety and environmental considerations related to construction and permanent installations.
• Knowledge of applicable codes, design requirements, permitting processes, and Authorities Having Jurisdiction.
• Strong understanding of engineering quality management, document control, engineering checks and reviews, and records retention.
• Intermediate proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Teams.
• Education and Certifications
• Bachelor's degree in Civil or Structural Engineering from a recognized university.
• Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) in good standing with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC), or eligible for registration in British Columbia.

• Relocation assistance is not provided.
• This is a safety-sensitive and security-sensitive position .
• A valid Class 5 BC Driver's Licence is required.
• The successful candidate must be willing to travel, including by plane and boat, as required.
• Requires working outdoors in all weather conditions with exposure to construction-related elements and may include walking in steep grades and long distances occasionally.
• Must be comfortable using ladders, fall arrest harnesses, and other PPE, during field work activities.
• Must be knowledgeable and comfortable using the latest remote working technologies to correspond and collaborate with project stakeholders.
• May require working nights or weekends occasionally based on project needs.
