The Tri-County Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE) encompasses the three (3) Counties of Shelburne, Yarmouth, and Digby serving approximately 6100 students in twenty-two (22) schools, composed of 13 Elementary Schools, 6 High Schools, 1 Middle School, and 2 Elementary/High Schools.

The Communications and Privacy Coordinator supports day‑to‑day internal and external communications and assists in ensuring compliance with information access and privacy legislation for the Tri-County Regional Centre for Education (TCRCE) and the South Shore Regional Centre for Education (SSRCE). Reporting into the Regional Executive Director(s), the Coordinator provides guidance, coordination, and operational support related to communications, FOIPOP requests, and privacy practices across the organization(s).

 

Qualifications:

  • Diploma or degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Information Management, or a related field.
  • 3–5 years of progressively responsible experience in communications, public relations, information access, privacy, or a related administrative or professional role.
  • Experience in the public sector or education environment is considered an asset.
  • Working knowledge of Nova Scotia’s Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPOP) and related privacy legislation.
  • Familiarity with privacy principles, confidentiality practices, and privacy impact assessments (PIAs) and/or digital resource assessments (DRAs).
  • Knowledge of communications best practices, including internal communications, public‑facing messaging, and social media administration.
  • Demonstrated ability to write, edit, and proofread clear, accurate, and audience‑appropriate communications.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple time‑sensitive requests and legislated deadlines.
  • Judgment and discretion in handling confidential and sensitive information.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, while knowing when to escalate unusual or complex matters.
  • Effective interpersonal skills; ability to provide guidance and explain processes to staff at all levels.
  • Proficiency with digital communication tools, websites, and social media platforms.
  • Experience developing graphics or visual communication materials is an asset.
  • Experience liaising with provincial partners or oversight bodies is an asset.

Key Accountabilities

Communications

  • Write, edit, and proofread a variety of communication materials, including newsletters, correspondence, website content, and social media posts.
  • Conceptualize, create, and produce graphics, infographics, and visual materials to effectively communicate information to diverse audiences.
  • Manage and monitor organizational social media channels, ensuring content aligns with corporate identity, guiding principles, and organizational priorities.
  • Ensure time‑sensitive announcements are prepared and disseminated through appropriate platforms in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Support senior leadership in responding to media inquiries and public communications, as required.

 

Access to Information & Privacy

  • Coordinate and process requests made under applicable legislation, including the Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (FOIPOP) and related privacy statutes.
  • Track, document, and manage information access and privacy requests, ensuring legislated timelines and internal procedures are followed.
  • Provide guidance, advice, and education on privacy matters, including access requests, privacy consultations, and the completion of Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) and Digital Resource Assessments (DRAs).
  • Assist with the investigation and documentation of privacy breaches and support the development of recommended response actions, in consultation with the supervisor.
  • Liaise with internal departments, schools, and external partners to obtain records and information required to respond to access and privacy matters.

 

Advisory, Coordination & Collaboration

  • Provide information and guidance to staff on communications practices, access to information processes, and privacy obligations.
  • Collaborate with IT and other Regional staff to support privacy awareness and proactive data protection practices.
  • Liaise with the Nova Scotia Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner and provincial partners, as required and under direction.
  • Participate in regional and provincial meetings related to communications and information access and privacy.
  • Contribute to the continuous improvement of communications and privacy practices by remaining current on trends and best practices and making recommendations to the supervisor.

 

Leadership Support & Best Practices

  • Provide advice and guidance to the Senior Management Team on communications, information access, and privacy best practices when issues, incidents, or sensitive matters arise.
  • Support senior leaders by identifying communications and privacy considerations, risks, and mitigation strategies related to emerging or complex situations.
  • Assist in the preparation and review of communications and responses related to sensitive or high‑profile issues, ensuring accuracy, consistency, and alignment with legislation and organizational standards.
  • Provide timely information and recommendations to support informed decision‑making by senior leadership, escalating unusual or high‑risk matters to the supervisor as appropriate.
  • Contribute to a proactive approach to issue management by promoting best practices in communications, confidentiality, and privacy compliance.

 

Other Duties

  • Carry out other duties and initiatives as assigned by the Regional Executive Director.

 

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

This is a Non Union position. The salary for this role is Band 11 as outlined within the terms and conditions of employment in accordance with the Education Entities Non-Union Compensation Framework. For additional details, the framework can be found here
