Kathy Bryck, Board Chair Jackie Robinson, Chief Executive Officer Position Description Page 1 Speech Assistant THE NORTHWEST CATHOLIC DISTRICT SCHOOL BOARD POSITION DESCRIPTION SPEECH ASSISTANT Title: Speech Assistant Reports to: Principal Supervises: Not applicable Location: As assigned Position Identification: School Support Position Summary: The Speech Assistant is responsible for providing direct care for students in Early Years through Grade Eight and for following the protocols as assigned by the Speech Language Pathologist in the Care Plan (goals) established for each student. The Plan will be based on appropriate standards, policies and procedures. The incumbent is responsible for managing the caseload and referring students to the Speech Language Pathologist. The Speech Assistant performs the duties as outlines in the Speech Assistant manual. The incumbent must follow established rehabilitation clinical protocols. Position Responsibilities: Under the direct supervisions of the principal, the incumbent interacts with students, principals, teachers and the Speech Language Pathologist, in order to obtain and provide information. The Speech Assistant may also take direction from the Speech Language Pathologist and/or the Special Education Resource Teacher. The Speech Assistant requires a solid understanding of strategies for developing goals in articulation, language, fluency and communication. The ability to show good judgment in relating to students, following instructions and maintaining confidentiality is essential. Knowledge of rehabilitation and speech language procedures is required. The Speech Assistant required the ability to properly transfer ad guard students. Excellent oral and written communication skills, excellent articulation patterns and literacy in language are required. The Speech Assistant must be able to work with children with multiple speech difficulties and goals. The incumbent will be required to learn and use computer technology and supportive services. The ability to work independently with limited direct supervision is required. The ability to prioritize duties and learn new shills and techniques in client care is vital. The incumbent must follow established rehabilitation clinical protocols and use good judgement, staying in compliance with the scope of practice by the College of Audiologists and Speech Language Pathologists of Ontario. Position Description Page 2 Speech Assistant Position Duties: • Assist the Speech Language Pathologist with speech language screening, without interpretation results. • Perform interventions following written treatment plans or protocols developed by the supervising Speech Language Pathologist. • Prepare instructional materials, schedule the student caseload and record student progress in terms of established daily goals. • Work one on one or in small group settings to implement general program goals established by the Speech Language Pathologist. • Apply applicable and a variety of techniques to assist student(s) in achieving prescribed goals. • Communicate with the supervising Speech Language Pathologist by written and oral means on the performance of the student(s) (e.g. collect data, prepare first draft of addendums to report cards, print information from computer based programs, give examples of responses, describe behaviour, etc.). • Prepare materials, maintain a schedule for the caseload, photocopy letters, perform filing and organizing duties and other clerical tasks as assigned. • Manipulate client care equipment, including assistive devices. • Participate in professional development activities. • All other duties as assigned. Working Conditions: The incumbent is exposed is interruptions, colds and viruses. The incumbent may be required to transport materials around the school regularly. Occasionally, the Speech Assistant transfers students over one hundred (100) pounds. Repeatedly, the incumbent is reaching in front of the body, pushing, pulling and reaching overhead. Qualifications: This position requires a Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, with the completion of the Educational Assistant course or Communication Disorders Assistant certificate. Knowledge of specialized training courses in speech and language programs or previous related experience is required. Good articulation and language skills are required. The Library Assistant helps staff and students to access materials and/or equipment. The Library Assistant plans and organizes special events and displays. Position Responsibilities: Under the direct supervision of the principal, the Library Assistant interacts with staff, students, volunteers and outside agencies to provide and obtain information. The incumbent must be able to work with minimal supervision. Excellent organizational, planning and multi-tasking skills are essential. Good communication skills are required. The incumbent must have good computer skills and a solid understanding of software, word processing and other computer applications used by the school. Position Duties: • Order all print and non-print materials. • Receive all incoming materials and check for damage or back orders. • Catalogue materials according to Dewy Decimal system and input into software program. • Bar code new material, stamp books/materials, add spine labels and cards and laminate as necessary. • Maintain a record of all incoming materials. • Keep track of audio/visual material and clean when necessary. • Assign bar codes to students/ • Organize, maintain and record the use of materials and equipment. • Remove old materials that have been replaced by new material and update the software program. Position Description Page 2 Library Assistant • Conduct an annual inventory check. • Repair damaged materials. • Assist the principal in the preparation of annual estimates for the library. • Assist the principal in monitoring the library budget, setting budget priorities and keeping detailed records of budget expenditures throughout the year. • Complete all purchase orders as required. • Coordinate purchasing for special projects and curriculum needs and receive, process and distribute the material. • Provide assistance to staff members in the selection of materials, public presentations/displays and special projects that may arise periodically. • Provide information to staff and students on the use of the library, including finding materials, library rules, using computer programs and other information as requested. • Prepare a schedule and revise it when necessary for classes to attend the library. • Read to students during class visits. • Set up displays to enhance reading themes (i.e. holidays, special events, new materials). • Organize book fairs, advertise the fair, find a supplier(s), organize book distribution set up, handle cash, sell unsold books back to the supplier, calculate and record the profit, prepare appropriate paperwork and clean up after the book fair. • Prepare appropriate public relations displays for parent/teacher interview times, open houses, general parental visits and other public events. • Run overdue and fine lists and provide it to the principal. • Keep library organized, neat and tidy. • All other duties as assigned. Working Conditions: The incumbent is exposed to interruptions and lack of privacy and has short periods of heavy lifting, moving materials, crouching and kneeling to put materials away. Qualifications: This position requires a Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, with the completion of the Library Assistant Technician course or equivalent. One (1) to two (2) years of previous on the job or related experience is required. Provides observation and assessment data, record keeping, care and assistance, as well as medical necessary interventions (e.g. catheterization, suctioning) and physical assistance where necessary. Position Responsibilities: Under the direct supervision of the Principal, the incumbent also takes direction from classroom and special education teachers. The incumbent works in partnership within the school as a whole, interacting with other staff members of the school, students and volunteers in order to support student needs in a meaningful way and exchange information. The Educational Assistant must be an excellent communicator with the ability to apply a variety of communication techniques. The ability to follow oral and written directions, multi-task, maintain confidential information and organize work time effectively is required. The Educational Assistant is required to have a good understanding of managing and preventing aggressive behaviours. The Educational Assistant must have excellent supervisory skills. Good problem solving and judgement skills are also required. The incumbent must be able to exercise sound, independent judgment and discretion when carrying out the requirements of the job. The Educational Assistant must be flexible in order to accommodate the changing needs and schedules of students. A good understanding of school policies, procedures and emergency plans is required. The Educational Assistant is required to work with safety in mind at all times. The incumbent is required to participate in Board professional development when required. Position Description Page 2 Education al Assistant Position Duties: • Assist the classroom teacher(s) and other educational support staff to modify and implement programs to meet the specific needs of the individual student. Assist in the administration of tests and examinations by reading, scribing and clarifying questions for assigned students. • Attend to the physical needs of students i.e. dressing, lifting, feeding (including feeding tubes), shallow surface suctioning, toileting (including clean catheterization as per Board Procedure) and assist with the personal hygiene of students. • Supervise identified students on field trips if required. • Supervise students during recess/nutritional breaks and lunch time. • Communicate effective and regularly with teachers, special education resource teachers, principal and/or other staff on the identification and referral of changes in student needs. Communication practices are unique to each environment and are established by each classroom teacher, special education resource teacher and/or principal or designate. • Under the supervision of the classroom/special education resource teacher/principal or designate, assist students individually or in small groups and follow up with students regarding homework assignments, check work for completion, correctness and understanding of instruction. • Assist in developing, implementing, reviewing, evaluating, revising and monitoring behaviour management programs for designated students. • Review and become familiar with the needs and goals of designated students through review of individual education plans and other relevant resources including participation in appropriate training/professional development sessions. • Provide support to classroom/special education teacher(s) for the evaluation of programs and student progress, including the individual education plan. • Assist in the utilization, inventory and maintenance of equipment needs such as sound field systems, computer peripherals, wheel chairs, standing frames, Hoyer lifts and adaptive communication devised or any other equipment deemed necessary for students. • Support classroom teacher/special education resource teacher(s) with home/school communication. • Collect and chart data and assist classroom teacher/specials education teacher(s) in other functional assessment activities to determine a student's developmental level. • Assist in ensuring a safe environment through sharing supervision of students during arrivals and departures, lunches, recesses/nutritional breaks and in the classroom during the teacher's brief unscheduled absence. • All other duties as assigned. Working Conditions: The incumbent works in a classroom environment and/or throughout the school with frequent exposure to interruptions, noise, colds and viruses. The Educational Assistant is occasionally exposed to inclement weather and behaviourally difficult students. Frequent heavy effort may be required for lifting, transporting, toileting or restraining students.
