Job Title: Technical Writer

The Technical Writer provides technical writing services in support of Integrated Logistics Support (ILS) deliverables within a defense environment. In this role, you collaborate closely with engineering, logistics, and project teams to develop accurate, compliant, and user-focused technical publications aligned with customer, military, industry, and internal requirements. You transform complex engineering data into clear, accessible documentation—such as operating manuals, maintenance manuals, and Illustrated Parts Catalogs.

Responsibilities

• Develop and maintain technical documentation under the direction of the Supervisor, Technical Publications, or a designated Technical Writer, including operating manuals, maintenance manuals, Illustrated Parts Catalogs, and related ILS documentation in accordance with customer, defense, and internal standards.
• Translate engineering drawings, specifications, design data, and approved source information into clear, accurate content suitable for both technical and end‑user audiences.
• Coordinate with cross‑functional stakeholders, including Functional Engineering, Configuration Management, the Program Management Office, and Supply Chain, to obtain source data, resolve content gaps, and verify technical accuracy.
• Ensure assigned deliverables comply with applicable defense documentation requirements, classification society regulations, contract requirements, and internal quality management systems.
• Use approved authoring and content management tools, including MadCap, HICO IPS Suite, R4i, Arbortext, Adobe FrameMaker, XML editors, and related software, to create, update, and publish structured documentation.
• Perform content validation, technical verification support, and publication quality checks to confirm completeness, consistency, and compliance before submitting deliverables for review and acceptance.
• Maintain document version control and incorporate approved configuration changes throughout the period of performance.
• Recommend improvements to documentation standards, templates, and authoring processes where these improvements support contracted deliverables.
• Support internal and external audits related to the quality and compliance of assigned documentation, as required by the contract.
• Apply a strong command of technical writing principles, structure, and formatting to present complex systems in a clear and logical manner.
• Identify content gaps, propose solutions, and continuously improve documentation efficiency and publication methods.
• Collaborate effectively with cross‑functional teams, managing expectations and ensuring deliverables are completed on time and to the required quality standards.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 2+ years of experience developing technical documentation in a heavy engineering environment.
• Strong command of technical writing principles, structure, and formatting for complex systems.
• Demonstrated ability to interpret and translate engineering drawings, data, and specifications into accurate documentation.
• Experience developing structured documentation using applicable standards and specifications.
• Strong understanding of applicable MIL‑STD and/or DEF STAN documentation frameworks.
• Proficiency with technical authoring and content management tools, including MadCap (such as MadCap Flare), HICO IPS Suite, R4i, Arbortext, Adobe FrameMaker, Raytheon Eagle, XML editors, and Microsoft Office.
• Excellent attention to detail, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and compliance with applicable standards.
• Ability to work independently while managing assigned deliverables and collaborating effectively with cross‑functional teams.
• Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to meet defined milestones and delivery dates.
• Exceptional written and verbal communication skills with a focus on precision and readability.
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to coordinate effectively with stakeholders while managing deliverable expectations.
• Analytical approach to identifying content gaps and improving documentation efficiency.
• Commitment to upholding safety, quality, and security compliance in a defense environment.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Degree in Technical Writing, Engineering, Communications, English, or a related discipline.
• Familiarity with defense industry standards.
• Proactive approach to identifying practical improvements in publication methods and documentation efficiency.
• Interest in building specialized expertise in complex engineering and defense programs.
• Motivation to contribute to high‑impact programs and long‑term lifecycle.

Work Environment

The position follows a hybrid work model: during the first two months, you work onsite full‑time to become familiar with the work, processes, and key stakeholders; starting in the third month, the schedule transitions to a hybrid arrangement with a minimum of two days per week onsite. You will work with complex engineering data and a suite of specialized documentation tools, contributing to high‑impact programs and gaining exposure to sophisticated defense environments. Job Type & Location

This is a Contract position based out of North Vancouver, BC.

Pay And Benefits

The pay range for this position is $39.00 - $44.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
