The City of Calgary has an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated lawyer to join a modern municipal law practice as a lawyer in the Municipal Law & Enforcement Section. You will have a significant degree of responsibility and autonomy within a team‑oriented and collaborative environment. We are looking for an applicant who wants to be a leader in the field of municipal law and enforcement matters. General responsibilities will include:
Responsibilities Advocacy work at all levels of court, including enforcement in the Alberta Court of Justice, Criminal and Traffic Division, Youth Court, Summary Conviction Appeals and Court of Appeal.
Advise enforcement staff on legal issues affecting day‑to‑day operation, policies, Charter issues, and training.
Provide strategic advice to City Council and liaising with Court staff, the judiciary, members of the public, officers, and member of the criminal defence bar.
Demonstrate leadership skills.
The flexibility to respond to other duties as required.
Qualifications A Juris Doctor (J.D.), Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) or equivalent degree from a recognized institution and active membership or eligibility for membership with The Law Society of Alberta.
2 – 4 years' experience in criminal law, preferably in Alberta is required.
You must bring a strategic approach to the law, technical expertise and a commitment to initiating and inspiring creative problem solving.
You have the ability to contribute to a positive work environment and team atmosphere, along with strong interpersonal and communication skills.
The ability to manage competing interests, tight timelines and work effectively and productively with a variety of people both internal and external to the Corporation.

Position and Pay Information Business Unit: Law
Union: Exempt
Position Type: 1 Permanent
Compensation: Lawyer 1: $115,219 – 144,024 per annum (typically 2-4 years' experience) Lawyer 2: $132,600 – 165,750 per annum (typically 5-8 years' experience)
Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week.
Days of work: This position works a 5-day work week with 1 day off in a 3 week cycle.
