Position Overview:

We're looking for an Ice and Hydraulic Performance Team Lead to join our Energy Operations & Water Planning Department. Under the general direction of the Hydraulics and Waterways Section Head, the Ice and Hydraulic Performance Team Lead is responsible for planning, coordinating, and executing hydrotechnical engineering assignments relating to open channel and ice hydraulics, powerhouse hydraulic performance, and computational fluid dynamics to support corporate functions including operations, project management, asset management, and stakeholder relations.

Responsibilities:

• Supervise a team of specialized engineers and technical assistants, providing leadership, performance management, and mentorship to advance individual development, capacity building, and safety within the team.
• Lead the execution of the Ice Engineering, Open Channel Hydraulics, Powerhouse Hydraulic Performance, and Computational Fluid Dynamics programs by coordinating subject matter expertise, establishing technical priorities, supporting decision-making, and ensuring the quality and consistency of engineering work.
• Direct, oversee, and execute physical and numerical hydraulic modelling studies, including 1D, 2D, and 3D analyses, to support hydraulic design, operational decision-making, waterway management, licensing, environmental assessments, and asset lifecycle management.
• Lead corporate river ice engineering activities, including monitoring, forecasting, assessment, and mitigation of ice-related impacts on hydraulic operations, and provide stewardship of the CRISSP modelling suite and associated ice engineering tools.
• Lead corporate hydraulic turbine performance testing and powerhouse hydraulics assessments to evaluate and optimize generation capacity, reliability, and efficiency in accordance with applicable industry standards and best practices.
• Provide project leadership and technical oversight for consulting studies, research initiatives, and multidisciplinary engineering assignments, including scope development, contract administration, review of deliverables, budget and schedule management, and coordination with internal stakeholders.
• Lead the development of technical capabilities, standards, tools, and research partnerships, and represent Manitoba Hydro in industry, academic, and stakeholder initiatives related to hydraulics, river ice, and hydropower performance.
• Prepare and review technical reports, briefing notes, technical memoranda, and engineering recommendations, and deliver technical presentations to internal and external stakeholders as required.

Qualifications:

• Graduate in Civil Engineering from a university of recognized standing with a minimum of seven years' related engineering experience in hydraulic engineering and/or hydroelectric system operation.
• M.Sc. or higher degree or recognized post-graduate level training in hydraulics or water resources engineering will be an asset.
• Professional member in good standing with Engineers Geoscientists Manitoba (or willingness and ability to attain within a specified amount of time).
• Strong leadership capability, with demonstrated ability to direct, lead, support, and work as part of a multidisciplinary team conducting complex program work and unique studies.
• Strong analytical abilities with demonstrated experience in hydraulic theory, analysis, design, and model studies, with an aptitude for long- and short-range vision and planning work.
• Advanced experience in the application and use of specialized hydraulic modeling computer software (e.g., Flow 3D, Mike 21/3, HEC-RAS) including GIS based applications.
• Possess initiative and mature judgment with the ability to make and implement sound decisions.
• Must be willing to travel and work overtime, including travel by all modes of transportation i.e. air, land and water.
• Must have a valid Province of Manitoba Driver's Licence.

Salary Range

Starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. The range for the classification is $52.88-$72.45 Hourly, $101,332.40-$138,828.30 Annually.
