Position Summary

The Fire Sprinkler Manager leads the fire sprinkler team and manages the estimating and delivery of service, inspection, repair, tenant-improvement, and retrofit work.

The position is accountable for team performance, accurate estimating, successful project delivery, safety, quality workmanship, customer satisfaction, and job profitability . The manager works closely with dispatch, account managers, other trade divisions, and administration to move work from the initial inquiry through completion and invoicing.

Key Responsibilities

1. Team Leadership and Daily Operations

Directly supervise sprinkler journeypersons, apprentices, and assigned support staff. Establish clear expectations for safety, workmanship, productivity, communication, and customer service.

Plan staffing and workloads with dispatch, assigning work according to employee qualifications, availability, and job priorities. Support recruitment, onboarding, training, apprentice development, and performance reviews. Address attendance, conduct, and performance concerns promptly with senior management. Review time entries and overtime requests within approved authority.

2. Estimating and Quotations

Complete site visits and review inspection deficiencies, drawings, specifications, and customer requests to establish the scope of work. Prepare timely estimates covering labour, materials, equipment, subcontractors, permits, testing, and other project requirements.

Obtain supplier pricing, identify exclusions and risks, and apply approved labour rates and profit margins. Prepare clear customer proposals, track outstanding quotations, and coordinate follow-up with account managers.

Price additional work and obtain customer approval before proceeding, except where approved emergency procedures apply.

3. Project Management

Manage awarded work from planning through execution, testing, deficiency resolution, and closeout. Establish job budgets, labour allowances, schedules, material requirements, and milestones, and communicate these expectations to the field team.

Coordinate purchasing, deliveries, subcontractors, site access, permits, design support, and inspections as required. Monitor progress, actual costs, and forecast costs to complete. Identify delays, scope changes, and cost overruns early, take corrective action, and escalate significant issues.

Ensure required reports, test records, as-built information, and customer signoffs are complete and ready for invoicing.

4. Safety, Technical Compliance, and Quality

Enforce company safety procedures and verify that personnel are trained and competent for their assigned tasks. Ensure work follows applicable codes, standards, approved designs, manufacturer requirements, and the requirements of the authority having jurisdiction.

Coordinate sprinkler shutdowns, impairment notifications, protective measures, and documented return to service with the customer and other responsible parties. Review inspection and service reports for completeness, escalate critical deficiencies promptly, and track follow-through. Arrange qualified design or engineering support when required.

5. Customer Relationships and Internal Coordination

Act as the escalation point for sprinkler-related customer issues. Clearly communicate scope, pricing, shutdown requirements, schedule changes, and project status.

Resolve deficiencies, complaints, and warranty concerns promptly. Work with account managers and other AK Brown divisions to coordinate service and identify appropriate maintenance, repair, and retrofit opportunities. Coordinate emergency-response coverage with management and dispatch as required.

6. Financial and Administrative Accountability

Review job costing and division performance with management, including revenue, gross profit, labour productivity, outstanding quotations, work in progress, and completed work awaiting invoicing.

Ensure purchase orders, time entries, subcontractor commitments, and change orders are recorded accurately. Support timely invoicing and resolve technical or scope-related billing questions.

Manage tools, equipment, vehicles, and inventory responsibly. Work within company approval limits for pricing, purchasing, staffing, and commitments, and escalate exceptions before approval.

Qualifications and Experience

• Trade background: Journeyperson Sprinkler Systems Installer certification recognized in Alberta preferred; a Red Seal endorsement is an asset.
• Relevant experience: Demonstrated commercial or industrial sprinkler experience, including service, inspections, repairs, and retrofit work.
• Leadership and project delivery: Proven ability to lead field teams, prepare estimates, and manage multiple jobs concurrently.
• Technical knowledge: Working knowledge of applicable building and fire codes and relevant NFPA standards, including NFPA 13 for sprinkler installation and NFPA 25 for inspection, testing, and maintenance, using the applicable adopted or contractually specified editions.
• Business and communication skills: Ability to interpret drawings, specifications, and inspection reports, supported by strong budgeting, organization, communication, and customer-service skills.
• Systems and travel: Proficiency with job-management software, estimating tools, and Microsoft Excel; a valid driver’s licence and ability to travel to job sites.
