Reporting to the Client Services Manager, Healthcare, the Client Service & Safety Advisor (CSSA) is responsible for the planning, execution, and evaluation of scheduled fire safety and emergency response drills across a defined portfolio of sites within the Lower Mainland Health Organization. Acting as Paladin’s primary operational representative, this role provides fire safety advice and guidance to health authority leadership, management and staff.
This Advisor works closely with Integrated Protection Services (IPS) and health authority leadership, providing subject matter expertise and decision support, and leading after-action reviews following fire safety incidents. The Advisor consults with a range of internal and external partners, including health authority leadership, fire departments, WorkSafeBC, and BC Office of the Fire Commissioner, to ensure fire safety plans and procedures are consistent with international standards and best practices. The Advisor participates in provincial fire safety education and leads fire drills and training.
The CSSA will also support IPS Operations with additional field-based tasks during available capacity. This role operates closely with HEMBC program control, under the direction of IPS as a front-facing advisor.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Facilitates in-person training and drills and delivers in-person orientations for new staff and facilities
- Implements a range of comprehensive reporting tools to ensure that health authorities can demonstrate compliance with fire code requirements
- Ensures that fire extinguishers receive monthly checks to ensure compliance and coordinates the annual inspection and testing of extinguishers in accordance with Fire Code, as requested/funded by health authorities.
- Provides coaching and mentoring to staff on fire safety protocols and supports growth through feedback, instruction and encouragement.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES AS NEEDED:
- Evaluate staff response effectiveness, SOP adherence, and emergency readiness during all drills
- Document drill outcomes, performance gaps, and provide corrective actions
- Overseeing a program of monthly inspection of fire extinguishers
- Promotes awareness of security and fire safety to Health Authority staff by delivering and supporting informational and educational programs, and participates in the review of evaluation of these programs; supports Health Emergency Management, through IPS with the fire safety program based on contractual standards
- Utilize remaining allocated time to support IPS Operations as directed and assist with field-based operational priorities including quality assurance, site visits, audits, inspections, or project-based support
- Performs other duties as required to meet operational needs.
REQUIREMENTS:
- Demonstrated ability related to public speaking and inspiriting confidence in delivering education to large groups of professionals
- Work towards certification in the following areas
- Fire Prevention Officer Certificate and/or Certified to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) standards such as the following is preferred:
- 1031, Fire Inspector
- 1033, Fire Investigator
- 1035, Fire & Life Safety Educator
- Demonstrated knowledge of fire & life safety in a healthcare setting.
- Demonstrated knowledge of BC Fire Code & Building Codes; NFPA 101 Life Safety Code; NFPA 99, Health Care, Facilities; NFPA 10, Portable Fire Extinguishers
- Demonstrated knowledge of the standards, systems and response agencies related to fire and life safety and emergency management.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in a supervisory or management role in the security industry, or an equivalent combination of relevant experience and education; experience within a healthcare environment is strongly preferred.
- Valid BC Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle for travel to work sites within the local region is required.
- Post-secondary education in security management, criminology, healthcare administration, or a related discipline considered an asset.
- Demonstrated ability to support the Client Services Manager, Healthcare managing teams, including coaching, performance management, and staff development.
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, including comfort delivering presentations and leading group discussions.
