Position Summary: The Student Advisor provides guidance and academic expertise to a diverse student population in the department of Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE). Facilitates the pursuit of their educational goals and ensure students benefit fully from their University experience. Assesses student academic progress and ensures students make appropriate educational choices and decisions. Responsible for communications materials related to student advising. Primary Responsibilities: - Provides advice to students on a variety of student and academic issues, such as program requirements and course selection;
- Create the course schedule; Evaluate program offerings and advise Program Directors with regard to course and program revision.
- Approve student's course selection and course requests for Inter /IntraUniversity Transfers, equivalency, Study Away, University Exchange, grade change, advanced standing, course exemptions and substitutions.
- Evaluate student records to determine completion of graduation requirements and approve graduation.
- Advise new and returning students on registration, readmission, and transfer credits.
- Manage student affairs activities and outreach activities for prospective, new, and returning Kinesiology and Physical Education students.
- Acts as advisor to department members on academic programs and University policies and procedures with regards to student academic advising and student affairs.
- Assesses student affairs situations, informs, and advises Chair, Internships and Student Affairs Manager, and/or Program Directors (UPD and GPD) and formulate recommendation on problem resolution.
- Responsible for updating and editing website materials related to student advising, as well as course and program information in the Undergraduate Calendar. Maintain and create pamphlets and e-communications to promote programs and program-related events.
- Liaise with internal University offices to better advise students to make thorough decisions on student academic affairs. Liaise with both program directors regarding course content and program requirements.
- Lead and develop group orientation and advising sessions for new and returning students.
- Provide guidance to students going through periods of personal, financial, or medical difficulties, and refers them to the appropriate resources within McGill.
- Review, evaluate and recommend academic background and records of applicants for the undergraduate and graduate programs to Program Directors.
- Perform other duties as assigned by Chair.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities Knowledge of University policies and procedures related to student affairs and academic programs. Demonstrated experience in student advising and student affairs processes. Demonstrated ability to work as a member of a team as well as autonomously. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and tact, be customer-focused and exhibit tolerance and compassion in stressful situations. Problem-solving skills with a proven ability to provide recommendations and suggest alternatives. Demonstrated organizational and priority setting skills with proven ability to multitask and work under tight deadlines. Strong communications skills with a proven ability to write, summarize and proofread student advising print and electronic documents. .Experience with the development of web-based communications. Proficiency with computerized applications including word-processing software, spreadsheets, presentation software, databases, Banner SIS , Workday, Slate, myProgress and Minerva, email and research on the Web. Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level #4 on a scale of 0-4.
