The South Shore Transition House (Harbour House) is currently in the midst of an exciting service expansion. We are seeking two full-time term Child and Youth Outreach Workers in Queens County and Lunenburg County to support children, youth, and women impacted by domestic violence, emotional abuse, and trauma within the family context.
This role delivers trauma-informed programming, outreach, advocacy, and support, while contributing to the growth and development of services. We are looking for individuals who are proactive, independent, and passionate about making a meaningful impact within their communities.
Responsibilities
As a Child and Youth Outreach Worker, you will be responsible for:
Counseling & Support
- Provide trauma-informed counseling to children and youth (individual/group, formal/informal)
- Support child/youth's self-esteem, autonomy, emotional regulation, and non-violent problem-solving
- Create safe, affirming environments and act as a role model to both children/youth and families
- Provide guidance, education, and support to mothers, families, and staff to support the child/youth's development
Advocacy & Outreach
- When necessary or requested by the family, advocate for the child/youth's safety, well-being, and access to long-term supports
- Assist with referrals, paperwork, appointments, court preparation, and meetings
- Deliver outreach services, including visiting the mother and children, offering support groups, and providing assistance to educational facilities or community agencies as requested
- Provide follow-up, referrals, and ongoing support to current and former clients
Education & Community Relations
- Deliver public education and training to increase public and professional awareness on the abuse of women & child abuse.
- Develop and distribute educational materials and resources such as brochures and pamphlets
- Collaborate with schools, agencies, and community partners, and liaise with the media
- Participate on committees, boards, and community initiatives
Administration
- Complete intakes, documentation, record keeping, and reporting
- Participate in meetings, hiring, staff/volunteer orientation, and budgeting support
- Develop, implement, evaluate, and revise children and youth programming
- Support operations, supervise student placements, and perform related duties in alignment with policy
Qualifications
As the successful applicant, you have:
- A strong understanding of child/youth development and developmental stages
- Knowledge of gender-based violence, child abuse, and their impacts
- An understanding of the cycle of violence and systemic barriers affecting women and children
- The ability to work effectively with children and adolescents and respond to crisis situations
- The ability to work independently and take initiative
- Strong communication, relationship-building, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
- A high level of professionalism, confidentiality, flexibility, and time management
- Commitment to ongoing learning, self-assessment, and professional development
Education & Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in sociology, psychology, social work, education, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Experience facilitating children and youth programs/services
- Valid Nova Scotia driver's license and access to reliable transportation

Full-Time Term Position (until March 31, 2029)
- Location: Based out of the SSTHA office in Liverpool, NS, serving Queens and Lunenburg Counties (travel required)
- Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (flex hours/days as appropriate)
- Hours: 78 hours bi-weekly
- Wages: As per Collective Agreement, Schedule A (starting at $27.94/hour)
Full-Time Term Position (1-Year Term)
- Location: Based out of the Harbour House shelter in Bridgewater, NS, serving Queens and Lunenburg Counties (travel required)
- Schedule: Includes Saturday and Sunday, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. (flex hours/scheduling to be discussed)
- Hours: 39 hours bi-weekly
- Wages: As per Collective Agreement, Schedule A (starting at $27.94/hour)
Both positions require flexibility and travel within the service area to meet client and program needs.
