Our Corporate Services Department is seeking an Industrial Hygienist who will oversee Metro Vancouver’s occupational hygiene programs and assist in resolving workplace health issues by identifying and controlling workplace hazards.

You are: Designated as a Certified Industrial Hygienist or as a Registered Occupation Hygienist with a minimum of five (5) years of recent, related experience.

The Industrial Hygienist reports to the Program Manager, Prevention Services.

This role:

• Ensures Metro Vancouver (MV) has accurate data and current information to assist in the identification, assessment and control of workplace hazards.  Reviews reports, regulations, research and industry best practices and provides technical advice and industrial hygiene guidance to managers and employees.
• Anticipates, recognizes, evaluates and controls workplace hazards related to chemical and biological safety, hazardous materials handling, ergonomics, confined space entry, noise, vibration, and radiation.  Conducts occupational monitoring and sampling for chemical, physical and biological hazards such as asbestos, lead, and toxic gases.  Interprets and analyzes results, produces reports and makes recommendations.
• Develops industrial hygiene programs and standards related to ergonomics, hearing conservation, occupational monitoring, body mechanics training, chemical and biological safety, WHMIS, transportation of dangerous goods, environmental (noise, vibration, radiation, temperature), and confined space entry.
• Performs risk assessments, exposure monitoring, regulatory and industry benchmarking. Determines criteria for hazards in need of controls for factors such as mould, asbestos, lead-based paint or confined spaces.  Collaborates with division staff to integrate the criteria in safe work procedures.  Develops and manages a wide range of standards, programs, and procedures for use throughout the organization.
• Formulates analytical methods, assessment frameworks and sampling strategies to measure and evaluate hazards in the workplace.  Interprets results and provides guidance and assistance to staff regarding hazard recognition, evaluation of risk, and control strategies to minimize worker exposures and injuries.
• Manages external Industrial Hygiene Services and Hazardous Materials Remediation projects.  Maintain corporate systems for hazardous materials information and management.
• Liases with WorkSafe BC and other regulatory agencies in matters related to Industrial Hygiene.  Keeps current on changes to safety regulations and legislation and builds relationships with safety and industrial hygiene experts to further knowledge of best practices in the field.  Participates in incident investigations for WorkSafe BC claims and assists to formulate a corporate position on claims.
• Performs duties as the corporate safety duty officer on a rotational basis responding to emergencies as required.  Performs role as the Emergency Social Services Director for Electoral Area A; responds to emergencies and provides short-term assistance to Electoral Area residents who are forced to leave their homes.  Assists other municipalities to address emergencies as required.
• Contributes to emergency management planning activities and assists to develop response plans for a variety of scenarios including accidents, natural disasters and pandemics.
• Performs other related duties as required.

To be successful, you have:

• 5 years of recent, related experience in a large diversified organization supplemented by a university degree or diploma in a relevant discipline such as science or engineering; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
• Designation as a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or as a Registered Occupation Hygienist (ROH).
• Sound knowledge and ability to interpret and apply relevant regulations and legislation such as the BC Occupational Health and Safety regulations.  Ability to make recommendations that are compliant with regulations, standards, codes, policies and procedures. 
• Sound knowledge and understanding of Industrial Hygiene best practices such as the environmental monitoring, identification and assessment of hazards.  Demonstrated and applied knowledge of industrial hygiene considerations for a large-scale utility engineering and heavy construction employer.  Demonstrated knowledge of mitigation techniques for high-risk work activities such as confined space entry and working with hazardous materials such as asbestos, mould, biological and chemical materials. 
• Ability to work under general direction and use sound independent judgment in adapting and applying procedures to address and resolve unusual or problem situations.  Ability to effectively navigate and understand technically complex business processes, practices and risks. 
• Excellent oral and written communication skills, including effective listening and persuasion skills. Superior business writing skills including the ability to analyze and revise safety procedures and standards and draft non-routine correspondence and reports regarding risk assessments, emergency planning, and exposure monitoring activities.
• Ability to build and maintain effective and respectful working relationships with internal and external contacts under circumstances that may be controversial or sensitive; ability to manage and respond effectively to stressful situations such as emergencies. Demonstrated ability to work in a team-oriented work environment.
• Sound judgment and problem-solving skills; ability to analyze business needs and provide strategic input.  Ability to provide professional advice and guide managers on industrial hygiene matters; strong analytical, interpretation and research skills and displays a high degree of integrity and professionalism.
• Ability to meet timelines and objectives and demonstrates persistence to overcome obstacles. 
• Considerable practical knowledge of a complex safety management and incident reporting and investigation system such as IRIS.
• Proficiency using Microsoft office programs, including Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
• Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s License.
