Duties and Responsibilities

Job Summary

The Cook is responsible for the planning, shopping, preparation, cooking and serving of nutritious snacks and meals for the children of the Eliza Archie Early Learning Center, the cleaning of the kitchen and eating areas, and assisting in administering the administrative affairs of the kitchen. The Cook is also responsible for Healthy programs, such as Healthy Food Bags in collaboration with the Head Start Coordinator etc. They will also work with the K4 program in providing opportunities to learn to cook, taste tasting, and other activities required as well as collaborate, prepare etc. for other programs offered through the Eliza Archie Early Learning Center.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Follows licensing and health and safety regulations in the operation of the kitchen
  2. Follows Food Safe, good safety and hygiene practices
  3. Follows Canada’s Food Guide and the Aboriginal Food Guide in the planning of meals
  4. Ensures that the children are provided with the essential nutrients for a healthy and active lifestyle
  5. Provides children and parents with opportunities to learn and develop nutritious and healthy eating habits
  6. Plans a weekly menu
  7. Prepares a grocery list and upon approval purchases the groceries and kitchen supplies.
  8. Prepares and cooks all meals (morning snack, lunch and one afternoon snack) for the children of the Eliza Archie Early Learning Center
  9. Serves meals to the children
  10. Cleans and disinfects the kitchen and eating areas
  11. Ensures that the kitchen is free of hazards

General:

  1. Writes related articles for the monthly newsletter.
  2. Works cooperatively and as a team member with other staff members and parents
  3. Attends monthly staff Professional Development days.
  4. Maintains and hands in receipts and any records related to the operation and administration of the kitchen and the planning of meals.
  5. Recognizes and respects all cultural diversity and understands Aboriginal culture.
  6. Maintains open and professional communications with co-workers.
  7. Takes responsibility for identifying upgrading of personal skills necessary to perform job duties.

Qualifications

Education:

  • Graduation from High School with preference for formal cook’s training certificate

Skills and Abilities:

  • Good communication skills
  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Knowledge of Shuswap language, culture, values and history
  • Lifestyle consistent with the importance and responsibilities of the position

 Experience:

  • Prefer Two to Three (2-3) years First Nation cooking experience
  • Experience working with children

Working Conditions:

  • Non-standard hours of work
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the job which may include moderate physical activity such as lifting or carrying, walking, standing, bending
  • Receives moderate supervision with less frequent direction and review of the work performed

Conditions of Employment

  • Must be able to obtain, maintain and hold a Criminal Records Check
  • Must be able to obtain, maintain and hold a valid Food Safe Level 1
  • Must be able to obtain, maintain and hold a valid First Aid Certificate

Directly Supervises

  • None

Term:

Monday to Friday ~ 6 hours per day total 30 hours per week

 Hour rate of pay: As per Tsq̓éscen̓ First Nation Salary Grid & based on experience.
