Under the direction of the TR Leger Manager of Literacy and Language Services, the Settlement/Outreach Worker is responsible for the outreach and recruitment of clients and the provision of settlement information to newcomer and immigrant individuals, families and throughout the community. In consultation with the Team Leader of Immigrant Services, the Settlement Worker plans and delivers activities and workshops both at the centre and other sites throughout the UCDSB catchment area in accordance with the guidelines under IRCC (Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada). The Settlement Worker orients, assists and advocates for and with newcomer/immigrant individuals and families in meeting their settlement needs.This position is covered under the UCDSB/CUPE collective agreement. For more information on employment information such as entitlements, pay, staffing, job protection, union security and dues information under the agreement please to view it on our external website.Qualifications and Experience Three-year college diploma in social work, psychology or a related field. A minimum of one-year experience with newcomers to Canada is required. Knowledge of community agencies and supports (e.g. Ontario Works, Employment centres), IRCC Settlement regulations and community and provincial demographics is an asset. Related employment or volunteer experience in social work or immigration services is an asset. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. Oral and written fluency in English is required. Travel may be a requirement of the position. Skills Required Strong organizational skills and ability to manage a variety of responsibilities concurrently. Ability to set objectives, plan work in advance and meet deadlines. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to respect confidential information. Ability to liaise with various community agencies including employment centres, social service agencies, education facilities in support of client settlement. Sensitivity to newcomer and settlement issues when meeting with clients. Strong communication and presentation skills. Ability to understand and apply Citizenship and Immigration Canada policy and settlement guidelines accordingly Demonstrated knowledge of community resources. Excellent word processing skills and computer applications including e-mail and internet. Ability to plan and assist in design of programs/services as identified by clients and current trends. Duties and Responsibilities Orient, assist and advocate for newcomer individuals and families in meeting settlement needs including making links with employment and business contacts, accessing Ontario Works, housing resources, social and culturally related contacts and other areas as identified by clients Provide settlement information and make internal and external referrals to community agencies for newcomers as determined by their needs. Plan and develop appropriate programs and workshops to support settlement clients and families (i.e. employment workshops, income tax information, nutrition, parenting) In consultation with the Team Leader, access translation and interpretation services as appropriate. Liaise and develop close connections with local organizations and community resources including educational facilities by providing settlement information and making referrals as required. Connect clients to the newcomer Host Program as appropriate. Follow IRCC policies and procedures in relation to newcomer settlement services Maintains Immigration Services Centre program files. Implement and track Immigration Services outreach activities. Collaborate with staff members by providing information and commentary on the centre’s improvement plans Assist in implementing school board procedures, rules and regulations. Maintain a safe and non-threatening working environment. Demonstrate good attendance and work in a healthy and safe manner. Attend professional development activities provided by the school board and/or as required by IRCC. Assist TR Leger Literacy Co-ordinator and Team Leader with program evaluation Meet regularly with TR Leger Literacy Co-ordinator to discuss operations and report on program status. Maintain confidentiality with respect to client and program information.
