The Opportunity: Barminco Mining Services Canada Ltd. has an exciting opportunity for a HSET (Health, Safety, Environmental and Training) Superintendent at the Red Chris Mine in northern British Columbia.  Working a FIFO rotation of 14-shifts on and 14-shifts off.

Reporting to the Project Manager, and functionally to the HSET Manager of North America, the HSET Superintendent is responsible forleading and supporting the site HSET department, ensuring alignment with both corporate and regulatory reporting requirements. The HSET Superintendent will serve as a systems-focused advisor to the Project Manager and broader site leadership team, helping drive continuous improvement in safety systems,risk management, leadership capability, and workforce engagement. The role focuses on strengthening safety culture, supporting operational teams, and ensuring critical risks are effectively identified, managed, and monitored across the site.

Position Responsibilities (including but not limited to):

  • Lead the implementation, performance, and continuous improvement of HSET systems and programs, ensuring alignment with Barminco and client strategies and objectives with a focus on proactive learning, critical control management, and an effective user experience.
  • Serve as a trusted HSET advisor to the Project Manager and site leadership team, supporting effective decision-making, risk ownership, and leadership capability.
  • Lead, coach, and develop the HSET team to build capability and foster a high-performing culture.
  • Drive site risk management processes, ensuring critical risks and controls are identified, monitored, and verified through effective assurance activities.
  • Lead incident management activities, including investigations, root cause analysis, corrective actions, and the sharing of lessons learned.
  • Ensure compliance with legislative requirements, company standards, client expectations, and industry best practices.
  • Monitor and communicate HSET performance, using data and insights to drive continual improvement and informed decision-making.
  • Partner with operational leaders, client representatives, and corporate HSE functions to integrate HSET requirements into daily operations and achieve sustainable outcomes.
  • Demonstrate visible safety leadership through regular field engagement, coaching, inspections, and support of operational activities.
  • Champion workforce engagement, accountability, and ownership of HSET outcomes to strengthen safety culture and operational excellence.
  • Oversee training, competency, emergency preparedness, and response programs to ensure personnel are equipped to work safely and effectively.
  • Promote a culture of care, accountability, and operational excellence by embedding routines and behaviours that reinforce ownership of HSET outcomes at all levels of the organization.

 

Skills and Experience:

  • Minimum 4-6 years of progressive HSET experience, with demonstrated leadership in fostering HSET systems, learning cultures, and empowering teams.
  • Experience in underground mining operations, with a strong understanding of underground mining processes, hazards, and operational challenges.
  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health & Safety, or a related discipline is considered an asset.
  • Thorough knowledge of the British Columbia Mines Act, the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines in British Columbia, and other applicable provincial occupational health and safety legislation and regulations.
  • Demonstrated success leading and continuously improving HSET systems, fostering learning cultures, and developing empowered, high-performing teams.
  • Strong knowledge of risk management, critical control management, incident prevention, and assurance processes.
  • Experience leading incident investigations with a focus on identifying organizational and systemic factors, root causes, and opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Proven ability to partner with operational leaders, influence decision-making, and drive accountability for HSET outcomes across all levels of an organization.
  • Strong coaching and leadership skills, with demonstrated experience developing individuals and teams through mentorship, engagement, and capability-building initiatives.
  • Proficiency in leveraging HSET data, reporting systems, and technology to support data-driven decision-making, organizational learning, feedback loops, and continuous improvement.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex information into practical actions.
  • Experience working collaboratively with clients, regulators, contractors, and corporate support functions to achieve shared objectives.
  • Maintain a valid Driver’s License; manual transmission experience an asset.

Work Conditions

  • Ability to work at a remote mining operation on a rotational schedule, typically 14 days on and 14 days off, including statutory holidays that fall within the rotation.
  • Must be physically capable of accessing all areas of the mine site, including underground workings, to conduct inspections, audits, incident investigations, and workforce engagement activities.
  • Ability to work a minimum of 12-hour shifts and maintain a flexible schedule to support operational requirements, including emergency response situations when required.
  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to communicate, sit, stand, walk, and navigate uneven terrain. Occasional climbing, bending, reaching, and working in confined or restricted-access areas may be required.
  • Must be capable of wearing and utilizing all required personal protective equipment (PPE) and safely accessing underground mining environments.
  • Exposure to varying weather conditions, including cold, heat, rain, snow, and wind, while working in outdoor and mining environments.
  • Exposure to moderate to high noise levels, dust, vibration, mobile equipment, and other conditions typically associated with underground mining operations.
  • Regular use of computers, mobile technology, and reporting systems for extended periods.
  • Ability to maintain a high level of situational awareness and focus in a dynamic, safety-sensitive work environment.

NOTE: Selected candidates will have to successfully complete a pre-employment Fit for Duty medical which includes alcohol and drug screening.
