Position Summary

Reporting to the Nurse Manager of the Student Wellness Centre (SWC), the  Nurse Practitioner role within the Student Wellness Centre will be an integral part of the Student Wellness Centre medical team on the Brantford and Milton Campus.  Laurier’s Student Wellness Centre provides student-centered, accessible, and confidential services that enhance students’ personal and academic success at university.  The multi-disciplinary SWC team is staffed by professionals with a special interest in providing service and coordinated health care and wellness support to university students. The team is currently comprised of medical physicians, a psychiatrist, counsellors, registered nurses, a mental health nurse, clinic aide, medical receptionists, health educators.

The Nurse Practitioner provides patient centred primary healthcare to a diverse student population with a variety of physical and mental health needs. This role contributes to the overall health and well-being of our students.

Accountabilities

Direct Client Service – 80%

Provides client-centred primary care to clients within the full scope of practice as defined by the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). Responsibilities include:

• Ability to work independently and autonomously to the full scope of a Nurse Practitioner, while also being able to work collaboratively within the interdisciplinary Student Wellness team.
• Performs comprehensive health assessments including a health history and physical examinations using a holistic framework with the management of acute and chronic medical conditions, therapeutic management, and health promotion.
• Considers the social determinants of health, associated health risks, and addresses the biopsychosocial needs of clients, including clients with multiple comorbid health conditions, mental health diagnoses and/or concurrent disorders involving substance use/abuse.
• Assess client presentation, evaluates urgency of care needed, and selects appropriate level of care.
• Facilitate referrals to other providers where appropriate and determines follow up
• Develop a care plan based on needs, while prioritizing appropriate diagnostic tests and procedures, with the ability to interpret the results of relevant screening and diagnostic tests.
• Accurately and thoroughly document assessments, plan, intervention and evaluation, and third-party correspondence in a timely manner
• Involve clients in decision making regarding their health, and in taking responsibility for their health.
• Prescribe pharmaceutical and other non-pharmacological therapeutic interventions, withing the scope of a Nurse Practitioner. Appropriately counsel clients on drug therapy, side effects and interactions.
• Counsel and guides clients on symptom management, health maintenance and rehabilitation strategies as well as risk factors and lifestyle changes.
• Practice with the lens of health promotion and illness prevention while aligning strategies in accordance with client health status and needs.
• Actively participates and provides consultation with campus and community health providers in the client’s circle-of-care which may include Physicians, NPs, RNs, Counsellors, and other allied health professionals Initiates and/or participates in case conferences when required.
• Applies flexible approaches in the delivery of primary care at Brantford and Milton campuses including assessments in person/remote, telephone, and virtual support where appropriate.
• Ensure Student Wellness Centre Director and team members who are in the circle of care, are aware of students who may be at risk of harm, significant deterioration, or otherwise require support from the Wellness Centre
• Assist students whose needs are outside the Wellness Centre scope of practice to identify and access other support services and facilitate referral

Administration – 10%  

• Supporting Medical Staff (RNs and Clinic Aide) along side the Nursing Manager, to ensure safe and effective patient care is being implemented and supported.
• Actively participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of health services at designated campuses.
• Work closely with Manager, Leadership Team and Director to support policies, procedures, and best practice development in the Student Wellness Centre.
• Inform and assist the SWC leadership team in assessing student health promotion and illness prevention needs and supports the development and the implementation of health promotion programs on campus as needed.
• Adhere to and applies established compliance measures within legislative requirements and equity principles (e.g., Human Rights Code and Ontario Employment Standards).
• Maintain medical records according to professional standards and ensures collection, use and disclosure of health information meets PHIPA guidelines.
• Work effectively within an inter-professional SWC team environment, as well as establishing excellent communication with support staff, faculty, and administration at all campuses.

Collaboration and Consultation-10%  

• Liaise closely with student support personnel and service areas. This includes, but is not limited to working closely with the Dean of Students, other Student Wellness Centre professionals, Accessible Learning, Learning Services (in particular, Early Alert and Learning Strategist staff), Residence Life, and Special Constable Service.
• Develop and maintain relationships with campus and community resources.

Qualifications

• Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Nurse Practitioner (Registered Nurse in the Extended Class) with no practice restrictions.
• Masters of Nursing Degree Preferred.
• Minimum of three years’ experience working as a primary care NP supporting clients with complex needs.
• Certification and membership in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) as a Registered Nurse Extended Class (Nurse Practitioner).
• Completion of a Nurse Practitioner Certificate in Primary Health Care.
• Member of the Nurse Practitioner Association of Ontario (NPAO) or Registered Nurses Association of Ontario (RNAO) is an asset.
• Must obtain own Liability Insurance.
• Demonstrated understanding of the social determinants of health.
• Experience working with diverse communities preferred.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate with clients in a non-judgmental manner that can be effectively understood – practicing active listening skills to understand client needs and coaching of clients as collaborative partners in their health care.
• Performs to maximum scope of practice and recognizes acuity/presentations beyond scope.
• Demonstrated ability to manage crises in an effective, professional manner.
• Strong independent worker with excellent consultative skills.
• Demonstrated excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills, organizational and interpersonal skills with an ability to work effectively and respectfully in a collaborative, inter-professional team environment.
• Excellent written skills and report writing for a clinical setting.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (e.g., Word) is an asset.
• Proficiency with Practice Solutions is an asset.
• Demonstrated experience and knowledge of electronic medical record/billing systems.
• Basic CPR and first aid certification required.
• Flexibility of working hours may be required to meet student needs which may arise outside of traditional work hours

Hours of Work

This is a Part-time, Continuing opportunity. Regular hours of work will be scheduled between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., generally over three days per week. Specific days may vary depending on workload and operational requirements. The position is scheduled for a total of 21 hours per week.

This role requires daily in person attendance and is not eligible for a flexible work arrangement as per Policy 8.14 (Flexible Work Policy).

Compensation

• Level:H
• Rate of Pay:$57.56 - $60.85 per hour with an annual step progression on anniversary date up to $65.78 per hour. Considerations for new hire step placements include, qualifications and length/depth of required experience, relevant market rates for similar jobs, internal equity, and estimated learning curve in starting the job.
