Duties
Reporting to the Director Athletics and Recreation, the Event and Community Engagement Coordinator is responsible for planning, coordinating and overseeing activities related to the staging and delivery of VIU Mariners varsity events. The Coordinator will also contribute to the development of community programs and partnerships for Mariners Athletics.
This position is also primarily responsible for the oversight of all Mariners in Training camps. The Coordinator is responsible for the program planning, general safety and overall enjoyment of the patrons attending the program as well as coordination of daily program operations, including customer relations, guidance and communication.
The Coordinator will also collaborate regularly with other divisions and coordinators to contribute to and improve the overall planning and delivery of activities that support student recruitment, engagement, retention, and success at VIU.
- In consultation with the Manager, ensuring that all VIU Athletics events meet the requirements of CCAA, Pacific Western Athletic Association and VIU policies and procedures;
- Coordinating the set-up of athletic facilities for events;
- Coordinating and overseeing game day staff, which may include, but not be limited to scorekeepers, game assistants, and statisticians;
- Working closely with the Communications and Sport Information Coordinator to schedule game day staff necessary for all VIU Athletics events;
- Coordination and implementation of Mariners in Training camps;
- Collaborating regularly with other student engagement units to ensure the successful delivery of programming and events designed to enhance student engagement and student experience;
- Assisting the Director with other Athletic and Recreation department activities, including but not limited to fundraising activities, awards banquets, and community development activities.
- Completes general updates on the administrative area, faculty or department website (e.g., game promotion, announcements, important dates), ensuring information is current and accurate.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related field. Minimum one years' experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Valid BC Class 5 Drivers License
- Knowledge of basketball, volleyball and soccer (basic understanding of playing rules/regulations)
- Experience in a post-secondary athletics and recreation setting or equivalent
- Event management and summer camp experience.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience as a varsity student-athlete and/or varsity game day staff member, with a strong understanding of the student-athlete experience and university athletics environment.
- Experience supporting varsity athletic events, including knowledge of game day operations and event execution.
- Demonstrated ability to complete and train others on basketball, volleyball, and soccer statistics programs and official scoresheets.
- Familiarity with the rules, procedures, and operational requirements of varsity basketball, volleyball, and soccer competitions.
- Experience working collaborative with coaches, student-athletes, officials, volunteers, and event staff.
