Summary

Wapiti Gravel Suppliers, a division of N.P.A., is looking for experienced Asphalt Rakerpersons to join our highway division!

The Raker redistributes the asphalt mix as it leaves the screed and prepares it for rolling. While acting as a member of the paving crew, the Raker is responsible for raking asphalt, shoveling excess asphalt, sweeping up debris and other various labour related duties.

Key Responsibilities

• Spread asphalt with a rake using efficient techniques and maintaining a good pace.
• Shovel excess asphalt and sweep up debris.
• Responsible for the proper match points and limits of asphalt mix adjacent to concrete structures, manholes, water valves and other fixtures within the road surface.
• Use asphalt rake to blend and level seams in the mat, reducing visible marks and seams in the asphalt surface.
• Measure and string the boundaries of the road surface as a guide for the paver. Verify, estimate and set the angle and depth of the screed as required.
• Promote, execute, and adhere to the company’s safety program, and encourage all employees, sub-contractors, and consultants to adopt safety as a culture.
• Work in a safe, responsible manner to not intentionally or unintentionally injure oneself, or endanger the wellbeing of others.
• Participate as a team member, and contribute towards the success of the organization, which may involve the provision of other technical and administrative support, as required.
• Must ensure a solid understanding of and comply with the principles of the company's Code of Ethics.
• Must examine situations in light of the principles of the Code of Ethics. Other raking and labour related duties as required.

Qualifications | Requirements

• High School Diploma or G.E.D. preferred Class 5 Drivers License preferred
• Minimum 3 - 5 years road construction experience
• Minimum 2 - 3 years of experience as an asphalt raker and understanding of asphalt raking techniques
• Basic mathematical skills 
• Knowledge of base and road construction methods.

Working Conditions

• Schedule of Monday - Saturday up to 12 hours per day (weather dependent). Overtime is paid in accordance with applicable employment standards legislation.
• Out of town travel may be required, accommodations and Live Out Allowance is applicable in most situations.
• Work is performed in an outdoor setting, which could include inclement weather, heat and humidity, and exposure to dust and asphalt.
• Must be physically able to repetitively lift and carry at least 50 LBS on a regular basis.
• Use of Personal Protection Equipment is required.
• Use of sunscreen, long sleeves, and appropriate headgear is recommended.
• Must comply with the company's drug and alcohol testing requirements.
