DISTRICT VICE PRINCIPAL, INDIGENOUS EDUCATION
Reporting to the Director of Indigenous Education, the Vice Principal supports the implementation of the District's Strategic Plan, the Framework for Enhancing Student Learning, the Aboriginal Education Enhancement Agreement, Local Education Agreements, and other District and Ministry priorities related to Indigenous education. The position works collaboratively with school and district staff, Indigenous students and families, community partners, and rights holders to support student belonging, engagement, achievement, transitions, and success.
The Vice Principal, Indigenous Education provides leadership, coordination, and support in the implementation of District Indigenous education programs, services, and practices. The role assists schools and departments in strengthening culturally responsive practice, supporting Indigenous learners and families, and advancing District commitments related to reconciliation and systemic change.
The position supports the leadership of school-based and district-wide initiatives related to Indigenous student success, community engagement, professional learning, student support planning, and Ministry and District reporting requirements. The Vice Principal works in a manner that demonstrates cultural humility, sound judgment, ethical practice, and a strong commitment to relationship-based leadership.
KEY
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Support the Director of Indigenous Education in implementing the District's vision, priorities, and operational plans for Indigenous education.
- Collaborate with school and District staff, Indigenous students and families, the Aboriginal Program, Máthxwi (Matsqui), q̓ʷa:n̓ƛ̓ən̓ (Kwantlen), q̓ic̓əy̓ (Katzie) and SEMYOME (Semiahmoo) First Nations, as well as Métis, Inuit, ya:y̓əstəl̕ (Indigenous Education Council) and urban Indigenous partners, to support Indigenous student success and well-being.
- Provide leadership and support to schools in developing and implementing practices that strengthen Indigenous student belonging, engagement, achievement, transitions, and completion.
- Assist in the implementation, coordination, and monitoring of Indigenous education programs, services, and initiatives across the District.
- Support schools in reviewing student and school data, identifying needs, and planning responsive interventions and supports for Indigenous learners.
- Promote the meaningful inclusion of Indigenous worldviews, perspectives, histories, and knowledge systems within learning environments, school practices, and District initiatives.
- Support professional learning for administrators, teachers, and support staff related to Indigenous education, cultural safety, anti-racism, and culturally responsive practice.
- Build and maintain respectful, collaborative relationships with Indigenous students, families, caregivers, community members, and partner organizations.
- Support District consultation, communication, and engagement processes with Indigenous rights holders, communities, and partners, in alignment with District direction and established agreements.
- Collaborate with school and District staff to identify and address systemic barriers affecting Indigenous learners and to support equitable access to programs, services, and opportunities.
- Assist with Ministry, local, and District reporting requirements related to Indigenous education programs, services, student success, and funding accountability.
- Contribute to the development of District procedures, communications, and practices that advance reconciliation and Indigenous student success.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Director of Indigenous Education.
QUALIFICATIONS, KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
The successful candidate will possess the following education, experience, knowledge, skills, and attributes:
- A valid British Columbia teaching certificate and eligibility for membership in the British Columbia Teachers' Council.
- A master's degree in education or a related field, or evidence of ongoing graduate study, is preferred.
- Successful experience in K-12 public education, including demonstrated leadership experience as a school-based or district-based administrator.
- Demonstrated commitment to truth and reconciliation and to improving outcomes for Indigenous students.
- Demonstrated knowledge of Indigenous education in British Columbia, including current Ministry direction, relevant legislation, and educational practice.
- Understanding of Indigenous worldviews, histories, cultures, and contemporary realities, with the ability to support their respectful integration in schools and District work.
- Knowledge of and experience working respectfully with First Nations rights holders, Métis, Inuit, and urban Indigenous communities.
- Demonstrated ability to build trust-based relationships and to work collaboratively with students, families, staff, administrators, and community partners.
- Effective communication, facilitation, advocacy, conflict resolution, and collaborative problem-solving skills.
- Ability to analyze student, school, and District information to support planning, decision-making, and continuous improvement.
- Demonstrated organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities, projects, and timelines effectively.
- Commitment to professional learning, reflective practice, and continuous growth as a leader.
- Indigenous ancestry, lived experience, and/or demonstrated community connection that deepens understanding of Indigenous education and reconciliation work would be considered an asset.
