About Us
Animal Care and Veterinary Services is dedicated to supporting and advancing safe and ethical animal-based research at Western and its affiliates through the following services:

• Oversight of Western Animal Care Facilities and those of Affiliated Institutions
• Institutional Animal-Based Research Support
• Quality Assurance (QA) Programs
• Animal Use Protocol (AUP) Review
• Sick Animal Response (SAR) Program
• Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and Policy Development and Review
• Animal User Training Programs

Responsibilities
The Animal Care Technician III will perform technical procedures to support the care and treatment of laboratory animals in accordance with approved animal use protocols. The role will administer medications, perform subcutaneous injections and other approved technical procedures, assist with minor procedures and sick animal response, monitor animal health, and maintain treatment and procedural records. Working closely with veterinarians, researchers, and other animal care staff, the Animal Care Technician III helps ensure the safe, humane, and effective care of research animals while supporting animal-based research.

Qualifications

Education:

• 2 year community college diploma 
• Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) Diploma and/or Registered Laboratory Animal Technician (RLAT)

Experience:

• 4 years of experience working as a veterinary or animal care technician in an animal care setting, handling and monitoring the health of animals
• Experience working in a research or laboratory setting preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Familiarity with animal "normals" for a variety of animal species
• Ability to provide timely and consistent animal husbandry that complies with all relevant policies and procedures, and recognize and report animal health issues
• Ability to maintain animal care standards in accordance with regulatory guidelines and legislation
• Ability to consistently utilize ergonomically sound processes in accordance with guidelines
• Ability to foster collaboration and respect among team members
• Verbal communication skills to clearly express ideas in an objective manner, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience
• Ability to maintain a positive, outgoing attitude with genuine customer service orientation
• Ability and willingness to employ a consultative and collaborative approach to addressing issues and making decisions
• Ability to assess current process and protocols and make recommendations for improvement
• Ability to work within a flexible schedule to accommodate the University’s events and activities
• Ability to follow formal business practices and maintain electronic and physical records and documentation with high attention to detail
• Discretion, tact and maturity to deal with highly confidential subjects or issues
• Basic computer skills in Microsoft Office Suite
• Ability to ensure a safe environment by identifying, resolving and reporting safety hazards
