Position Overview

The Vancouver Community Older Adult Mental Health and Substance Use Services require a part-time Psychiatrist to join an interdisciplinary team in caring for patients generally over 65 with mental health problems. The team consists of geriatric psychiatrists, other physicians, case managers, counsellors, neuropsychologists and administrative staff. Clinical settings may include outpatient visits, community home visits/outreach, residential care facilities, and indirect case reviews within a collaborative care model. All VCH physicians must be appointed as medical staff of Vancouver Coastal Health. On-call participation is optional.

Key Responsibilities

  • Practice person-centered care.
  • Utilize a team-based approach, provide consultations and longer-term psychiatric care as necessary.
  • Provide culturally safe and responsive care for Indigenous patients.
  • Practice trauma-informed care.
  • Include families whenever possible.
  • Employ principles of community-based psychiatric care.
  • Collaborate in the management of concurrent substance use disorders.
  • Provide expertise and consults, and respond to and collaborate with case managers.
  • Facilitate continuity of care between acute and community settings, and liaise with hospital physicians and staff as necessary.

Education, Licensing, & Experience

  • Provisional or unrestricted license to practice medicine from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of British Columbia.
  • Fellowship in Psychiatry from the Royal College of Physicians of Canada, and ideally completion of a Geriatric Psychiatry Subspecialty Residency training.
  • Eligibility or current appointment as clinical faculty with the University of British Columbia Faculty of Medicine.
  • Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA) – Mandatory.

Knowledge & Abilities

  • Strong knowledge base in psychopharmacology and psychological interventions.

Additional Requirements

Applicants must provide a resume and cover letter. As per Ministry of Health policy, all health care workers in publicly-funded facilities must provide documentation of past receipt of certain vaccines or history of infection. New hires will be required to provide this information as part of onboarding.
