About Our Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Communication Advisor to develop and deliver clear, impactful communication for a diverse audience. The advisor will promote public understanding of initiatives, programs and services, work with media, and develop communications products and strategies in collaboration with marketing, video, photo, design and other professionals.
Key responsibilities include briefing senior leaders, advising elected officials, managing media relations, and supporting Legislative Assembly sessions.
Primary Accountabilities
- Briefing and providing advice to senior staff and elected officials
- Supporting Legislative Assembly sessions and committee appearances
- Media relations and issue management
- Developing and implementing communication strategies
- Writing news releases, speeches and other materials
- Content development for social media, public announcements, marketing and web
- Event planning
- Partnering on stakeholder communications
- Occasional evening and weekend work may be required
Qualifications and Experience
• Post‑secondary degree in public relations, communications, journalism or related field; several years of professional communications experience or equivalent.
- Strong writing skills, including plain language and speech writing
- Media relations experience
- Collaboration and teamwork
- Experience developing and implementing comprehensive communication strategies, leveraging traditional and digital methods
- Experience with inclusion and accessibility strategies
- Digital platforms and social media expertise, with ability to engage large audiences on limited resources
- Advisory experience with senior staff and elected officials
- Fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment experience
Assets
- Understanding of the public‑sector environment
- Leadership experience
- Knowledge of Nova Scotia’s unique social, historical and demographic makeup
- Experience working with vulnerable populations and understanding related complexities
- Knowledge of data analytics, human‑centered approaches and artificial intelligence
- French language skills
