Résumé des fonctions
Le ou la chef de train fait partie d'une équipe de train formée de deux ou trois personnes, et s'acquitte des tâches associées à la circulation des trains, des wagons et des locomotives dans les triages et sur la route. La personne titulaire du poste coordonne la formation des trains et cette personne effectue des travaux au sol à l'extérieur de la cabine de la locomotive dans le triage et en cours de route (manœuvre des aiguillages, ramassage des wagons et réparations d'urgence).
Principales responsabilités
- Veiller au respect de tous les ordres de marche, signaux, règles et règlements ferroviaires relatifs à la sécurité et à l'exploitation
- Employer diverses formes de communication pour transmettre et recevoir des instructions concernant la circulation et la mise en place des wagons
- Former et séparer des trains dans le triage, et ramasser et dételer des wagons en cours de route
- Observer, interpréter et relayer les signaux afin d'assurer la sécurité des mouvements de train et de locomotive
- Manœuvrer des aiguillages pour modifier l'itinéraire des locomotives et des wagons
- Vérifier l'état des trains et du matériel roulant
- Prendre des décisions efficaces aux endroits non familiers ou dans les situations d'urgence
- Communiquer efficacement avec le Centre de contrôle de la circulation ferroviaire, les autres équipes de train et les autres services de façon régulière au moyen d'une radio portative
Conditions de travail
- Horaire souple et quarts réguliers et prévisibles, dans le contexte d'une exploitation ferroviaire 24 heures sur 24
- Travail par quarts de nuit, les fins de semaine et les jours fériés, des heures supplémentaires et séjours loin de son domicile pendant de longues périodes, au besoin
- Capacité de pousser, tirer, soulever et transporter une charge pesant jusqu'à 90 livres (41 kg)
- Travail effectué principalement à l'extérieur dans diverses conditions météorologiques et environnementales
- Utilisation de divers dispositifs sur les wagons et les locomotives, comme des leviers de dételage et des freins à main
- Capacité de monter dans l'échelle d'un wagon en mouvement et d'en descendre
- Capacité de saisir et de tenir des objets tout en se tenant sur le côté d'un train en mouvement
- Capacité de marcher souvent pendant de longues périodes
- Capacité de se pencher, se plier, s'accroupir et s'agenouiller fréquemment
- Respect des exigences d'évaluation de l'aptitude au travail pour le poste, notamment celles qui sont établies par l'ACFC, comme la capacité de reconnaître et de distinguer les couleurs des signaux
Expérience
- Expérience de travail pertinente dans des conditions similaires ou dans un milieu assujetti à des règles d'exploitation et de sécurité*
Éducation/Certification/Désignation
- Formation collégiale, professionnelle ou technique, ou expérience à titre de chef de train marchandises*
- Diplôme d'études secondaires ou l'équivalent

Connaissances et compétences techniques
- Réussite des examens portant sur la sécurité et le Règlement (conformément à la convention collective, les chefs de train doivent se qualifier à titre de mécaniciens de locomotive pour conserver leur ancienneté et leur emploi)
- Carte d'attestation d'étude du Règlement valide
- Permis de conduire en règle
- Passeport valide permettant d'entrer aux États-Unis et au Canada (à certains endroits)
- Excellentes compétences en communication orale et écrite
- Toute expérience ou formation dans l'un des domaines ci-dessus constitue un atout
Exigences supplémentaires (le cas échéant)
La personne titulaire du poste participe à une formation rémunérée intensive de 11 semaines (7 en classe et 4 sur le terrain) au Campus CN à Winnipeg. Les dépenses relatives au transport, à l'hébergement et aux repas pendant la formation à Winnipeg sont payés. Une fois les 11 semaines de formation terminée, le ou la titulaire du poste effectue au moins 45 voyages en accompagnant une équipe afin de parfaire ses connaissances et ses aptitudes. La réussite à ce programme de formation, y compris les examens écrits et la formation sur le terrain incluant les exigences physiques, est obligatoire pour travailler à titre de chef de train. Ce poste est syndiqué. Par conséquent, le salaire et les avantages sociaux sont régis par la convention collective en vigueur.
