Job Information

The Ophthalmic Technician is an Allied Health professional who examines, assesses, diagnoses, and treats eye conditions for residents of the Northwest Territories (NWT) and Nunavut (NU). Working at the Stanton Eye Clinic, this role supports the prevention of vision loss and helps patients achieve the best possible vision outcomes.
The position provides both direct patient care and expert advice to a wide range of health professionals and community partners. The technician plays a key role in outreach services, travelling regularly to communities across the North to deliver eye care services.
Reporting to the Supervisor of the Stanton Eye Clinic, the Ophthalmic Technician is part of a team delivering services to all 56 communities in the NWT and NU, seeing approximately 15,000¿20,000 patients annually. The role includes consultation with physicians, nurses, and other health professionals, as well as public education.

Key Responsibilities
-    Perform and document comprehensive eye examinations, including patient history, diagnostic testing, and assessment
-    Diagnose ocular conditions and develop individualized treatment plans, including use of pharmaceuticals
-    Provide patient education on diagnoses, treatment plans, and eye health
-    Deliver patient-centered care while supporting safety, dignity, and confidentiality
-    Assist in surgical procedures, including pre-operative testing, intra-operative support, and post-operative care

Key Qualifications
-    Knowledge of ophthalmic theory, diagnostic techniques, and treatment practices
-    Ability to operate specialized ophthalmic equipment in both clinical and community settings
-    Ability to work independently in remote and isolated environments
-    Demonstrated commitment to patient safety, confidentiality, and ethical practice
-    Strong teamwork skills and ability to collaborate with interdisciplinary teams
-    Physical ability to travel frequently and transport equipment

To be successful in this role, typically, the above qualifications would be attained by: 
This level of knowledge is most commonly acquired through Stanton Ophthalmic Medical Technology Training Program or through other accredited Ophthalmic Medical Technology Training Programs.
