Job Description

The Director, Engineering & Maintenance (East) promotes a safe working environment and provides strategic leadership on the support and maintenance of all mail handling and processing equipment and systems within the region. Works through their plant-level teams to execute maintenance strategies to optimize the life cycle expectations and the performance of the equipment and assets through a combination of internal and external resources.

Allocates and directs internal and external resources including maintenance management professionals, engineering managers, and technical employees in the maintenance and support of equipment and systems. Partners with plant and area operations Directors to optimize equipment performance and deliver results. 

Develops talent through succession planning, training, and professional development. Promotes a culture of safety, quality and efficiency. Manages financial and non-financial resources within budgets towards achieving the objectives of the organization

Job Responsibilities

Below are the main job requirements and responsibilities for the Director, Engineering and Maintenance

• Establishes and maintains a safety culture at all levels of their organization through visible leadership by example and ensures training, documentation, personal protective equipment, and procedures are available and applied. Encourages initiative and leadership in all aspects of safety.

• Leads a professional Engineering and Maintenance team that oversees the safe execution of preventive, predictive and corrective maintenance to ensure high equipment reliability.

• Partners with plant and area Operations leadership to meet shared goals for equipment reliability and support.

• Identifies requirements for asset replacement, life extension, and other critical maintenance programs that may be necessary as part of the complete life cycle management of assets. 

• Collaborates with functional authorities, regional counterparts, and other stakeholders to ensure effective integration, sharing of lessons learned, and prioritization of technical and safety issues.

• Drives process excellence through rigorous application of corporate business processes.

• Manages financial and physical resources to effectively meet organizational objectives, including ensuring staffing levels.

• Develops talent through active coaching, succession planning, training, and professional development; leads the technician development and upgrade training programs.

• Participates in multi-disciplinary projects to ensure short and long term maintenance impacts are accurately assessed and reflected in implementation.

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering.

Experience

• 7 to 10 years of experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Experience in a unionized environment essential.
• 5 or more years of experience managing people.
• 5 or more years of experience in maintenance management an asset.
• Experience managing a remote team an asset.
• Operations leadership experience an asset.

Other Candidate Requirements

• Proven track record as a safety enabler in an industrial environment.
• Excellent team building and leadership skills and experience.
• Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to build and maintain relationships, coach team members and peers, and influence without authority.
• Eligible for provincial professional engineering designation.
• Excellent organizational skills.
• Strong background in cost management & budgeting.
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
