Responsibilities

This role will focus on building and maintaining the AI agents, workflows, and pipelines that power member-facing features and internal tools across the company.

• Design, build, and maintain AI agents and pipelines that integrate LLMs into member-facing features and internal tools
• Monitor performance, cost, reliability, and output quality of agents and pipelines in production, and build observability into these systems
• Integrate LLM APIs and third-party AI services into our Rails backend and existing systems
• Evaluate and select AI tools, models, and services, balancing capability, cost, and reliability
• Collaborate with other teams to identify opportunities where AI can improve member experience or internal workflows
• Troubleshoot issues and iterate quickly as models, tools, and best practices in the space evolve

Qualification/Experience

• Bachelor's degree in Computer/Software Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent
• 5+ years of professional software development experience
• Professional experience with Ruby on Rails is required
• Experience building applications that leverage Large Language Models (LLMs) and AI APIs
• Experience designing and integrating backend services and APIs
• Experience with vector databases, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG), prompt engineering, and AI agent frameworks
• Experience with observability or monitoring for AI systems (tracing, evals, logging, cost and latency tracking) is an asset
• Experience evaluating and integrating third-party AI services and tools
• Fast learner with strong problem-solving skills

We are looking for candidates with proven experience, who can be expected to ramp up quickly and establish themselves as independent contributors within a year.

Below are our levels. The typical years of full-time work experience are a guide only.

AI Developer I 
Early-career contributor building fundamentals
Salary range: $80-115K
Typical Work Experience Range: 0-4 years

• You can take well-defined tasks through to completion, with support when the work is new or the path is unclear
• You ask good questions, keep people informed, and follow through on your commitments
• You are still building experience with larger/complex problems and the lifecycle of a production application

AI Developer II
Independent contributor who can be trusted to deliver solid work
Salary Range: $103-135K
Typical Work Experience Range: 4-9 years

• You can take ownership of projects in most parts of our codebase
• You work directly with stakeholders to clarify goals, refine specs, and challenge scope when needed
• You know which decisions need wider team input and can bring options and tradeoffs to the team
• You help improve the codebase and the way the team works

AI Developer Senior
Experienced contributor driving impact at the system and team level.
Salary Range: $125-160K
Typical Work Experience Range: 8+ years

• You can take on complex work, starting with only an expected outcome
• You make decisions that hold up over time and consider the wider impact on the system
• You treat technical debt as a deliberate tradeoff: sometimes it helps us move faster; sometimes it needs paying down before it starts to limit us
• You help less experienced developers grow and make the team stronger over time
