What you’ll do

  • As the Transmission Equipment Engineering Division Manager, you are responsible for managing and overseeing the Transmission Equipment division with approximately 50 professional, technical, and administrative staff, acting as a technical resource to senior management and others, and providing direction to staff and consultants retained to augment staff. The Transmission Equipment Engineering division is accountable for equipment in transmission stations and telecommunication sites, as well as for underground transmission lines, and works closely with Transmission Stations Design, Transmission Lines Design, Project Engineering, Protection and Control Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, North Coast Engineering divisions within Transmission Engineering, as well as Quality and Estimating, Maintenance, and CADD divisions in Engineering Services.
  • Leads the Transmission Equipment Engineering Division within Transmission Engineering, focusing on equipment in substations and underground transmission lines for BC Hydro’s transmission system with the following sub-disciplines: station equipment, fire protection, station mechanical, project engineering, and cable design. Manages the technical, operational, and strategic performance of the Division in support of BC Hydro's mission, vision, and priorities. This includes ensuring the technical and leadership development of the Division’s staff provides effective cross-discipline teams to work on or oversee (as Owner’s Engineer) engineering deliverables for complex projects, including regulatory compliance, that require a high level of collaboration, technical innovation, safety focus and business acumen.
  • Accountable for the operational performance of the Division; developing and managing the business plan and division budget ensuring that resources are utilized in a cost-effective manner; evaluates the feasibility of projects considering resources and costs, and manages the resource workload balance within the Division. Develops staffing and training/ development strategies and technical succession plans, establishes performance expectations, develops the required competency profile for the engineering disciplines, and directs ongoing professional development of staff to develop and retain appropriate levels of expertise and competency.
  • Acts as an experienced technical resource with a high level technical understanding of substations equipment and design, underground cables design and other transmission disciplines, and the development and application of engineering and quality assurance standards. Actively seeks out and promotes developments and innovations in the field and applies new ideas as appropriate. Ensures engineering work is compliant with MRS, EGBC and Safety standards and regulations.
  • Manages and maintains relationships between BC Hydro, vendors and external engineering service providers and internal relationships between Engineering divisions and with Capital Infrastructure Project Delivery, PCM, Asset Planning and Sustainment, Operations, Category Management, Safety, MRS compliance and others. Contributes to the entire Engineering team through the facilitation of broader business initiatives such as the successful application of advanced tools and processes, Safety by Design and Mandatory Reliability Standards, development, support and sustainment of design standards, equipment specifications, and procurement, as well as development of broader engineering standards.
  • Acts as Responsible Registrant for the EGBC Professional Registrants in Transmission Equipment Engineering. Ensures alignment to EGBC's Professional Practice guides and standards, and BC Hydro's Professional Practice Management Plan.

What you bring

  • Undergraduate or Post-Graduate Degree in Engineering (Electrical or Mechanical preferred, other relevant discipline may be considered) recognized by Canadian Universities and accredited by Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
  • Must be registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (EGBC).
  • Fifteen+ years of experience working in a utility-based engineering environment including considerable experience in transmission, including equipment specifications, design, safety requirements, and mandatory regulatory standards. Minimum of 8 years of direct or indirect people management experience. Outstanding candidates with lesser experience may be considered.
  • The ability to manage the successful delivery of engineering products through strong management, analytical, interpersonal, communications, and negotiation skills, and a customer service attitude.
  • Demonstrated decision-making skills that include sound risk management, business, and technical judgement considerations.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership, relations management, conflict resolution and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to manage relationships and work closely with stakeholders to drive innovation, find engineering solutions that add value, and address competing interests.
  • Ability to establish a high level of rapport with senior management and work collaboratively with asset planning, operations, regulatory and other stakeholders in determining appropriate courses of action.
  • Familiarity with transmission engineering tools and processes, applicable mandatory reliability standards, applicable safety standards, planning and design guides, contract equipment specifications and tender evaluation preferred.
