Environmental Protection Technician (Landfill Gas Maintenance Technician)

Main Purpose and Function
The Landfill Gas Maintenance Technician is primarily responsible for the efficient operation of the landfill gas control system at the Vancouver Landfill.  These systems include the LFG wellfield, flare station, compressor and related appurtenances. More specifically, the position maximizes LFG collection and utilization, and flare station uptime while at the same time minimizing the risk of landfill fire, emission of greenhouse gases/odours and ensuring the safety of the staff/public. Due care and attention are required at all times during data collection to identify problems and make corrections to minimize the risk of fire/explosion. This position is based out the Vancouver Landfill in Delta, BC. 

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

• Conducts monitoring including data logging for the well field, manifolds, and flare station/systems.
• Performs routine maintenance, troubleshooting and calibration of instruments used for monitoring including: Landtec GEM5000, personal gas monitors, etc.
• Installs, operates and maintains the landfill gas well field leachate pumping system.
• Conducts routine field monitoring including liquid levels, temperature probes (permanent and down well), pipeline inspection camera operation and data interpretation, and equipment inspections.
• Performs preventative and reactive maintenance on all field equipment related to the LFG control system.
• Analyses, interprets, and presents data to other Landfill Gas Maintenance Technicians and landfill management staff, including identification of trends or anomalies and recommendations for follow on work.
• Liaises with contractors or other City forces (including Operations, IT, SCADA, Electrical, Survey) and consultants who provide contracting and professional services with respect to the operation of the LFG control system.
• Conducts landfill gas data management and analysis, using specialized data management software.
• Reading, reviewing and updating related safe operating procedures, operating manuals, etc.
• Conducts presentations and tours of the landfill and/or landfill gas system as needed for staff and members of the public.
• Participates in standby rotations and responds to callouts to maintain flare station operation after-hours.
• Backfills for other landfill gas technicians during vacation or absence.
• Other duties/responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications
Education and Experience:

• Completion of a recognized two year diploma program in Environmental Protection Technology, Environmental Engineering Technology, Mechanical Engineering Technology or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
• Certification in the Solid Waste Association of North America's (SWANA) Manager of Landfill Operations (MOLO) and LFG Operations courses preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Considerable knowledge of gas collection and sampling techniques.
• Considerable knowledge of PLC and SCADA systems and reading engineering drawings is an asset.
• Experience working at landfills and/or waste management facilities.
• Knowledge of various computer programs including Microsoft Office suite.
• Strong interpersonal and written/oral communication skills with the ability to effectively liaise with operations staff, engineering staff and superintendents as well as external third parties.
• Ability to perform detailed work accurately and to assess data independently in order to make operational changes as needed.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Ability to take initiative and perform duties with minimal instruction while meeting scheduling requirements.
• Ability to care for, maintain, operate, calibrate, and simple repair field equipment and apparatus.
• Ability to perform physical work outdoors in all weather conditions for extended periods of time
• A valid BC Class 5 driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record in accordance with the City of Vancouver policies.
• Ability to collect, compile, analyze, and interpret data.
• Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to use hand tools and handheld power tools is an asset.
• Experience and training in working with explosive gases, surveying, i.e. using GPS and level instruments, and conducting water quality monitoring or vapour monitoring is an asset.
• Experience using handheld measurement equipment in as asset. Examples of equipment include:  Landtec GEM, Landtec SEM5000, or other landfill gas analyzer with data logging capability and personal gas monitors.
• Canada Safety Council UTV/ATV Operators Certificate or equivalent is an asset.

• Copy of your five-year ICBC Commercial Driver’s Abstract (N Print) directly from ICBC dated within 14 days of this posting
• Copy of your five-year ICBC Driver’s Claims History directly from ICBC within 14 days of this posting
• If you have less than five years driving experience in BC, a request must be made for out of province/country abstract and claims history
