Im Jahr 1917 verschlägt es den zurückhaltenden und talentierten Musikstudenten Lionel vom ländlichen Kentucky an die Ostküste, wo er am Boston Conservatory seinen charmanten und selbstbewussten Kommilitonen David kennenlernt. Über ihre gemeinsame, tief empfundene Liebe zu traditioneller Folk-Musik kommen sich die beiden näher, doch dann wird David als Soldat eingezogen. Einige Jahre später erreicht Lionel ein Brief, in dem David seinen Freund bittet, ihn auf einer Reise durch die Wälder von Maine zu begleiten. Die beiden Männer teilen nicht nur Momente inniger Zweisamkeit, sondern entdecken in ländlichen Gemeinden auch fast in Vergessenheit geratene Folk-Musik. Das einfühlsame Drama mit Paul Mescal und Josh O'Connor in den Hauptrollen wurde bei den Filmfestspielen von Cannes 2025 für die Goldene Palme nominiert und erhielt mehrere internationale Auszeichnungen und Nominierungen.
