The Role

GrizzlyTrek is hiring Hydrovac Operators out of Rocky Mountain House to join our valued client's team on oilfield and utility daylighting work across west central Alberta. Pay is $35.00 to $40.00 an hour based on verified hydrovac time, overtime starts after 8 hours in a day, and the work runs year round.
Rocky Mountain House sits in the middle of west central Alberta's oil and gas country. The work is daylighting and hydro excavation: exposing pipelines, buried utilities and well site infrastructure, potholing for integrity digs and tie-ins, slot trenching, and cleaning out sumps and catch basins. Days run out of the Rocky yard to lease sites, plants, municipal projects and road right of ways, with occasional out of town work.

What You'll Do

  • Operate a hydrovac unit for daylighting, potholing and slot trenching around live pipelines, utilities and well site infrastructure
  • Set up and run the wand, boom and vacuum system safely, including work in and around open excavations
  • Hand expose buried facilities in line with ground disturbance requirements, locate documents and site prints
  • Complete pre-trip and post-trip inspections, and keep the unit clean, fueled and service ready
  • Haul and offload spoils to approved disposal facilities and complete manifests and paperwork correctly
  • Complete FLHAs, hazard assessments and permits before the job, and field tickets after it
  • Work safely around client crews, operating facilities and traffic, following site specific procedures

What You Bring

  • Class 3 licence with air brake (Q) endorsement, Class 1 preferred, and a clean current driver's abstract
  • Hydrovac operating experience, or vac truck and combo unit experience with the ability to move onto a hydrovac
  • Current tickets: H2S Alive, Standard First Aid with CPR, CSTS-2020 or PST, and Ground Disturbance Level 2
  • Comfortable working around live pipelines, utilities and operating facilities, and able to read locate documents and prints
  • Able to work outdoors in all weather, handle hose and wand for long stretches, and repeatedly lift up to 50 lbs
  • Reliable and safety-first, and able to run a unit at a customer site without someone standing over you

Nice to Have

  • Class 1 licence, and experience running a tridem unit or pulling a trailer
  • Steam truck, pressure truck or combo vac experience
  • Confined Space Entry and Fall Protection tickets, or a current oil and gas site orientation on file

Pre-Employment Requirements

  • Successful completion of Alcohol and Drug Screening
  • Successful completion of comprehensive Fitness-to-Work Assessment. This assessment is job-related, focusing on the physical demands and safety sensitive nature of the work, and is conducted in accordance with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) requirements and the Alberta Human Rights Act. The assessment will cover:
    • Health History Review: A thorough examination of the candidate's health background.
    • Pre-Medical Evaluation: Measurements such as height, weight, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation.
    • Musculoskeletal Examination: A head-to-toe assessment to identify any limitations or concerns related to physical health.
    • Critical Strength and Mobility Test: A series of tasks assessing lifting, carrying, and positional abilities aligned with the job's physical demands (up to 50 lbs).
  • Worker to provide valid safety training tickets, a valid driver's licence with a current driver's abstract, and CSA approved safety boots (minimum 6 inch, fully laceable)
Employment is conditional upon successfully meeting all of the pre-employment requirements listed above.

Work Environment

  • Outdoor work in all weather, year round, at lease sites, plants, municipal projects and road right of ways
  • Day shifts with overtime, plus call out and weekend work as jobs demand
  • Physical work: hose and wand handling, climbing on and off the unit, and repeated lifting up to 50 lbs
  • Noise, vibration, and exposure to water, spoils and site traffic
  • Work around live pipelines, utilities and operating facilities under permit and locate requirements

Why Operators Take This Job

$35.00 to $40.00 an hour, and where you land in that range comes down to hydrovac time you can verify, not a number talked down after the interview. Overtime starts after 8 hours in a day, not after 10 or 12. Required orientations and assessments are paid at $18.00 an hour, so the days before you turn a wheel are paid days. The work is out of Rocky Mountain House and stays in west central Alberta, so you are driving home, not flying north. And the units run year round, so this is long term work rather than one job and a layoff.
Pay is a gross hourly rate before deductions.

What We Offer

  • Overtime after 8 hours in a day or 44 hours in a week
  • Required orientations and assessments paid at $18.00 per hour
  • Life insurance plus AD&D with critical illness and cancer coverage
  • Extended health: drugs, hospital, vision, and paramedical including mental health
  • Dental coverage, including orthodontic coverage for children
  • Travel insurance, plus ongoing training and career development support
