Position Overview
Reporting to the Chief Data & AI Officer, the AVP of Data & AI Governance is a pivotal leader within the Enterprise Data & Analytics Office (EDAO), ensuring the strategic mobilization of the organization in managing data as a critical and shared business asset and ensuring effective oversight of AI risk.
Collaborating closely with teams from HR, Information Security, Compliance, Risk, and IT, the AVP leads the organization in recognizing and maximizing the value of data assets and mitigating data‑related risks, ensuring a coordinated approach when engaging with the organization’s business lines and support functions on all matters related to data asset management.
In support of this, the role leads initiatives in Data Literacy, Data Stewardship, Data Traceability, Data Knowledge Management, Data Quality Management, Master Data Management, and Metadata Management.
While a foundational understanding of technical concepts is important, this role primarily focuses on leadership and business transformation. Success hinges on the ability to articulate the value of data governance and effectively influence senior management and internal stakeholders to fully engage in their fiduciary responsibilities regarding the data they use and produce.

- Facilitate executive alignment on priorities across the Data & AI Governance ecosystem.
- Promote the development of a data‑savvy workforce through effective data literacy programs in partnership with HR.
Key Responsibilities
- Participate in the development and alignment of the organization’s enterprise Data & AI strategy.
- Lead a high‑performance team of subject matter experts to deliver a coherent and complete Data Governance program.
- Provide vision and direction on how to establish and manage enterprise‑wide priorities and make decisions with cross‑functional impacts in relation to data.
- Establish and operate a multi‑level, high‑impact data governance committee framework.
- Build effective programs to motivate and mobilize Data Stewards and Data Guardians to fully engage and meet the responsibilities associated with their roles.
- Empower lines of business and support functions to articulate their needs in relation to data management, governance and risks and oversee enterprise‑wide Data & AI Governance priorities and remediation initiatives.
- Ensure the efficiency and coherence of the corporate policy framework on matters relating to data including data asset management, data risk management, data analytics and AI.
- Empower lines of business and support functions that use and produce data to understand and effectively manage the data‑related risks related to their activities.
- Ensure the performance of standards, processes and tools for effective:
- Data Stewardship
- Data Guardianship
- Data Knowledge Management
- Data Quality Management
- Master and Reference Data Management
- Metadata Management
- Data Traceability
- Report on the value generated through effective Data & AI Governance.
- Lead the development and delivery of effective Data Literacy programs.
- Prepare and analyze department/unit plans and reports and manage projects to achieve department/unit goals.
- Create an effective work environment by developing a common vision, setting clear objectives, fostering teamwork, recognizing outstanding performance, and maintaining open communications.
- Develop employees through coaching, providing performance feedback, effective performance assessments, and establishing objectives and development plans.
What We Are Looking For
- Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant domain; MBA would be considered an asset.
- Excellent interpersonal communication (written and verbal), team building and negotiation and consensus‑building skills.
- 10+ years of data governance and data management experience.
- Proven ability to lead through influence, drive change and build and maintain strong relationships with senior stakeholders and foster alignment and collaboration across diverse business functions.
- Experience in leading and managing a data governance team and program.
- Expertise in defining and implementing data governance policies, standards and processes.
- Knowledge and experience in data management, security, privacy and risk management.
- Knowledge and experience with agile data governance and agile data management.
- Knowledge and experience in the financial services industry is an asset.
- Bilingualism (written and verbal) in English and French.
