Senior Backend Developer

Type of hiring: Subcontract (Subcon)

Location: Montreal, QC; Toronto, ON; Mississauga, ON (Hybrid – 2 days a week)

Overview

We are looking for a senior backend developer who writes clean code and understands architectural implications. The candidate will shape the future of backend engineering with TypeScript, building scalable, forward‑thinking systems.

Key Requirements

• Deep TypeScript Knowledge : Expert‑level understanding and advanced typing patterns.
• Microservices : Proven experience architecting and operating distributed systems at scale.
• Rapid Domain Acquisition : Ability to quickly learn new business concepts and model them effectively.
• Behavior‑Driven Development (BDD) : Hands‑on experience using BDD to align code with business requirements.
• Leadership : Able to mentor engineers and set technical standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop, test, and deploy high‑quality backend services and APIs using TypeScript.
• Collaborate with Solution Architects to implement modern architectural patterns (hexagonal architecture, event‑driven design).
• Write clean, efficient, well‑documented code, adhering to best practices and coding standards.
• Contribute to the design and development of scalable and resilient systems.
• Participate in code reviews, providing constructive feedback to peers.
• Troubleshoot and debug complex issues in production and development environments.
• Work with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) to deploy and manage services.
• Assist in the creation and maintenance of technical documentation.
• Stay up‑to‑date with emerging backend technologies and trends, particularly in the TypeScript ecosystem.

Required Qualifications

• 10+ years of professional experience in backend development.
• Strong proficiency in TypeScript, including its advanced features and type system.
• Hands‑on experience with Node.js and associated frameworks (Express, Nestjs).
• Proven experience designing and building RESTful APIs.
• Experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
• Understanding of modern architectural patterns (microservices, event‑driven).
• Experience with version control systems (Git).
• Excellent problem‑solving and debugging skills.
• Strong communication and collaboration abilities.

Preferred Skills

• Experience with infrastructure‑as‑code (Terraform, CloudFormation).
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and practices.
• Experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Knowledge of asynchronous messaging patterns (Kafka, RabbitMQ).
• Experience with GraphQL.
• Understanding of DevSecOps principles.
• Familiarity with front‑end technologies for integration purposes.
