Psychoeducator

The psychoeducator plays a critical role in promoting the optimal development of students and in creating inclusive and safe educational environments. Working in close collaboration with the school teams, the candidate will support them in understanding, evaluating and intervening with youth with adjustment, behavioural or socio-emotional development difficulties.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provides professional support to school teams by accompanying them and contributing to the development of intervention strategies and coordination plans, reintegration, or intervention protocols.
  • Assesses the needs of students in order to guide appropriate courses of action and participates in the implementation of consistent practices within classes and schools.
  • Organizational support in complex or crisis situations, collaboration in preventative actions and participation in interdisciplinary work with other professionals, parents and partners.
  • If necessary, refer the student to the people concerned as well as to specialized institutions.
  • Contributes to the development of training by providing expertise on the development of social-emotional skills and by proposing intervention strategies adapted to the needs of students and the school environment.
  • Participates in case studies as part of a multidisciplinary team.

The psychoeducator participates in the development and implementation of the psychoeducation service while respecting the educational and administrative frameworks, both at the level of the institutions and the school board.

  • He or she contributes to the recognition of students experiencing difficulties, with a view to prevention and intervention;
  • He or she plans and conducts an assessment of students' adjustment difficulties and adaptive abilities, particularly students with disabilities or social difficulties, and students at risk, in order to determine the student's functioning profile and psychosocial needs;
  • The incumbent collects relevant information from school or external stakeholders and parents, selects and uses appropriate assessments, and conducts observations and data analysis as part of the determination of a protocol or intervention plan to meet the student's needs.
  • He or she participates with the multidisciplinary team in order to make recommendations for courses of intervention; he or she participates in the choice of objectives and means of intervention;
  • He or she collaborates with the other members of the team to coordinate interventions and evaluate the achievement of objectives.
  • He or she participates with school teams in the development and implementation of strategies and projects to help students who have or are likely to have adjustment difficulties.
  • He or she accompanies and advises other school workers of students with adjustment difficulties; provides strategies for intervening with these students and guides them in the choice of attitudes and approaches to promote the development of desirable social behaviours and adaptive skills;
  • He or she plans, organizes and facilitates training activities.
  • He or she advises the management staff, writes expert reports, assessment reports and situation developments and makes appropriate recommendations to support decision-making.
  • He or she advises and supports school workers in the integration of students in regular classes; he or she proposes means of intervention or activities appropriate to the student's situation.
  • The incumbent establishes and maintains collaboration and linkages with partner organizations; communicating with other relevant stakeholders to obtain or provide advice and information;
  • He or she may direct the student or his or her parents to resources appropriate to the situation and needs.
  • He or she may be called upon to intervene to help defuse crisis or emergency situations and propose possible solutions.
  • He or she prepares and ensures that files are updated according to the standards specific to the profession and the rules defined by the school board;
  • She writes progress notes or reports on the evaluation of the stage, the end of the process and the follow-up of her interventions.
