Controller

Our client, a well-established and growing accounting firm in Corner Brook, Newfoundland , is seeking an experienced and strategic Controller to oversee operations and support continued growth. This is an excellent long-term career opportunity for a designated CPA with at least five years of progressive, hands-on experience in public practice or a public practice–adjacent environment, strong technical accounting expertise, and demonstrated leadership ability.

Key Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day accounting operations including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger
• Prepare monthly and annual financial statements, internal reporting packages, and forecasts
• Lead budgeting and forecasting processes, providing financial insight to support strategic firm decisions
• Analyze financial results, variances, and trends, and provide clear recommendations to leadership
• Manage cash flow, banking relationships, and financing activities
• Ensure accuracy and timeliness of month-end and year-end close processes
• Maintain and enhance internal controls, accounting policies, and procedural frameworks
• Ensure compliance with tax regulations, reporting requirements, and applicable accounting standards
• Liaise with external auditors and coordinate year-end audit processes
• Supervise, support, and mentor accounting and finance staff

Experience & Attributes for Success

• Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation required
• 5–10 years of progressive accounting experience, ideally within public practice or a firm-based environment supporting multiple clients or entities
• Strong technical accounting knowledge with full-cycle accounting experience
• Experience with accounting software such as Sage, QuickBooks, or similar systems
• Advanced proficiency in Excel and financial analysis
• Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills
• Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain financial information to both internal stakeholders and clients
• Comfortable working in a dynamic, deadline-driven environment with multiple priorities
