Senior Engineer - Transmission P&C Design

About the job: The Protection & Control Engineering Division is responsible for engineering BC Hydro’s Protection & Control systems and Networks, ensuring these systems contribute to safe and reliable operation while meeting performance requirements of system planners, regulators, customers and other stakeholders. Our team provides engineering studies, standards, specifications, design solutions, construction documentation, and engineering oversight for work done by service partners, and provides technical support during procurement, construction, testing and commissioning. We also support asset lifecycle with failure analysis and emergency operational support for restoring customer supply. This temporary role supports the Protection & Control Design department and the P&C Infrastructure Design team working on Transmission Stations, Transmission Lines, or Interconnections and PCM projects.

What you’ll do

Provide design and engineering support for transmission utility substation P&C systems operating between 12 kV and 500 kV.

Engage in the engineering of electrical utility P&C systems, analyzing and resolving challenging engineering problems independently.

Manage medium and large‑sized projects and work packages, write specifications and standards, estimate capital costs, and mentor junior staff.

Provide technical guidance to engineers, consultants and support staff; coordinate projects of low to high complexity.

Review the work of the project team, consultants and contractors to ensure accuracy and adherence to engineering standards.

Develop and maintain professional relationships with internal and external colleagues to prioritize work and resolve issues.

Chair meetings, attend seminars and conferences, and prepare and deliver presentations.

What you bring

A degree in Electrical Engineering (preferably Power Engineering) recognized by Canadian universities.

Registration, or eligibility for immediate registration, as a Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC).

A minimum of 8 years of experience in the engineering, design and implementation of electric utility protection and control systems.

Strong communication skills, including verbal, technical writing and presentation abilities in English.

Strong organizational skills and ability to collaborate in a team environment, coordinating the design of complex multistage greenfield/brownfield protection and control systems.

In‑depth technical knowledge of transmission P&C systems for substations and line protection philosophy for major equipment (transformers, capacitors, reactors, circuit breakers, disconnect switches).

Technical knowledge of the electrical, mechanical, control, monitoring, metering and operating requirements of components used in such systems.

Ability to investigate, analyze and solve a variety of challenging engineering problems.

Knowledge of NERC Critical Infrastructure Protection standards and requirements.

Experience with Advanced Design data modelling using AutoCAD Electrical and Autodesk‑compatible tools.

Experience in developing standards and documentation, mentoring less‑experienced resources and contributing to industry groups or committees.

Effectiveness in work leadership, coordinating multiple projects, and managing project resources.

Experience managing the engineering component (scope, schedule, cost, technical risk) of large or technically complex projects.

Ability to manage client relationships, ensuring their needs are met and driving innovation in engineering solutions.

This is a temporary opportunity until approximately October 2027.

The successful candidate will work from the BC Hydro Edmonds office in Burnaby, BC.

Travel to sites within BC, including remote locations and, on occasion, outside the province.

A condition of employment is maintenance of a Class 5 Driver’s License in good standing.

Prior program or asset‑management experience is an asset.
