Special Education Teacher

Kayla’s Children Centre (KCC) is a school, therapy clinic, and recreational centre for children with disabilities, behavioural challenges, and complex medical needs. The centre supports children ages 6 weeks to 21 years who have a wide range of disabilities and provides a variety of specialized programs that enable them to flourish academically, socially, and emotionally. KCC also offers personalized supports and respite for families. 

KCC’s programs include a licensed day care and specialized school; on-site therapy centre; after-school and weekend respite; adapted sports; life skills programs for teens; a state-of-the-art hydrotherapy centre; and day and overnight camps.

Position Summary

Teachers at Kayla’s Children Centre (KCC) are responsible for delivering engaging, developmentally appropriate instruction that supports the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral success of all students. They are expected to integrate therapeutic strategies, collaborate with school teams, and maintain strong communication with families. Teachers contribute to the positive culture and values of KCC through professionalism, collaboration, and leadership.

Key Responsibilities

• Teaching & Instruction
• Deliver developmental and age-appropriate content across subject areas.
• Utilize multiple instructional formats (whole group, small group, centers, IAS, and 1:1).
• Implement multisensory approaches, visual supports, structured routines, rules, and transition plans.
• Integrate therapeutic strategies and proactive behavioral interventions.
• Use assistive technology (class-wide or individualized) as needed.
• Maximize non-teaching moments (e.g., recess, transitions) to reinforce learning and social skills.
• Model positive engagement, communication, and behavioral strategies for students and staff.

Individual Education Plans (IEPs)

• Adhere to IEP timelines, processes, and documentation requirements.
• Collaborate with BCBAs to develop objectives, goals, and data collection methods.
• Ensure full involvement of classroom, behavior, and rehab teams in IEP creation and implementation.
• Conduct IEP meetings professionally, with timely follow-through on action items.

Lesson & Unit Planning

• Develop weekly detailed schedules that reflect instructional formats, subject areas, and staff/student responsibilities.
• Create lesson plans for academic instruction.
• Create unit plans for thematic, project-based, or event-based learning (e.g., Judaics, calendar, social studies).
• Incorporate differentiation strategies into all lesson and unit plans.

Staff Leadership & Collaboration

• Lead weekly classroom meetings, maintaining documented notes and follow-up.
• Participate in monthly/biweekly rehab team meetings with documentation and follow-up.
• Implement strategies recommended by BCBAs, therapists, and School Leadership Team.
• Ensure compliance with OAP-funded programs within the classroom.
• Share updates and relevant information with classroom staff (e.g., student files, programs, parental updates).
• Provide clear, consistent feedback to classroom staff, fostering accountability and professional growth.

Parent Communication

• Send a general email at the start of each unit outlining goals and outcomes, inviting parent input.
• Provide weekly classroom emails with curricular/program updates, events, reminders, and photos.
• Maintain monthly parent touchpoints, including at least one phone call every two months.
• Document written follow-up after phone calls (except “sunshine calls”), sharing with relevant parties.
• For students requiring personal/medical care, provide daily updates in a format convenient for parents and staff.
• Submit weekly contributions to the school newsletter.

• Attend all staff meetings, family events, extracurricular activities, and assemblies.
• Maintain punctuality, attendance, and classroom organization (including bulletin boards)
• Pursue professional growth opportunities, including after school PD events.

• Use appropriate channels to resolve concerns and challenges.
• Adhere to Jewish values, sensitivities, and dress code.
