Anesthesiologist (300-1108)

Island Health has an opportunity for a full‑time Anesthesiologist to join their team at the Comox Valley Hospital.

The Comox Valley Hospital is a new 150‑bed community hospital with state‑of‑the‑art facilities. There are six operating rooms, five operational and one reserved for emergency caesarean sections.

Anesthesiologists provide services for Obstetrics and Gynecology, Urology, General Surgery, ENT, Dentistry, Ophthalmology, and Orthopaedics. In addition, anesthesiologists provide anesthesia for ECT and cardioversion and assist with emergency intubations in the ER and ICU.

Comox anesthesiologists also run a consultation clinic and an out‑of‑OR position designated as Rover.

Weekday call starts at 1500 and ends at 0800, with mandatory on‑site coverage until 2000, then home call thereafter. Pre‑call and post‑call are off. Weekend and stats are 24‑hour call 0800 to 0800 with mandatory on‑site coverage from 0800 to 1200.

Applicants must have recent (within six months) pediatric (2 yrs and older) and obstetrical experience or demonstrate a plan to update these skills. Applicants will be flexible in their ability to increase coverage during HR shortages to ensure we can fulfill our APP requirements.

Interested applicants should plan to spend a minimum of one week with the department and ideally longer as a locum in the department.

Once the locum is complete, each candidate will undergo a thorough 360‑degree assessment. Candidates who meet the criteria and have a successful locum will be offered an interview.

May be eligible for additional remuneration in accordance with the Rural Subsidy Agreement including:

• Fee Premium – 6.93%
• Annual Flat Fee – $10,739.52
• Recruitment Incentive – $10,000 (pro‑rated for FTE amount)
• Relocation Costs – up to a maximum of $15,000 (depending on location moving from)
• Rural CME: Years 3 & 4 – $3,000/annum; after 4 years – $6,000/annum
