Registered Visual Sign Language Interpreters

Our District is currently seeking Registered Visual Sign Language Interpreters for Doncaster and Oaklands Elementary schools. The Registered Visual Sign Language Interpreters work in a classroom to facilitate communication between the student, staff and peers. Interpreters are not participants in the class; rather they attend to the communication needs of the student. The Interpreter functions as a part of an educational team with specific roles and responsibilities as defined by the profession of interpreting with consideration given to the educational setting in which they work.

You will:

Provide Visual Sign Language Interpretation for a student in an elementary classroom setting.

• Participate in team meetings (including development and review of progress toward the goals of the student’s Individual Education Plan), providing insight on the success of communication strategies and bringing relevant student information forward.

• Have completed a recognized post-secondary degree in a sign language interpreter training program with associated interpretation experience (preferably in an educational setting).
• Be a member in good standing with the Westcoast Association of Visual Language Interpreters (WAVLI). Membership must be maintained.

This is a 10-month per year contact appointment at 32.5 hours per week with a contracted rate of $64.89. The hours and location of work may vary with the contract.
