Job Summary

Reporting to the Supervisor of Technical & Design Services and working under the direction of a Survey Crew Chief, this position supports Regional infrastructure projects by collecting, processing, and delivering survey data for planning, design, construction, operations, and asset management activities. As part of a survey crew, the successful candidate operates advanced survey equipment and technologies to produce accurate and reliable survey deliverables while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and professionalism.

The ideal candidate is self-motivated and detail-oriented, with a commitment to delivering high-quality work through initiative, accountability, sound judgment, continuous learning, and effective collaboration.

NOTE: There is one (1) permanent full-time position available, working 37.5 hours per week. The Region will consider the education, qualifications and experience of applicants when determining hiring at either the Survey Technician or Survey Instrument Technician level. Candidates selected for an interview will be required to complete a technical competency assessment.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Support the Survey Crew Chief in the planning and execution of survey projects for Regional infrastructure, construction, operational, and asset management initiatives.
• Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot survey equipment including GNSS/GPS receivers, robotic total stations, digital levels, data collectors, and associated software.
• Collect, process, and document survey data in accordance with departmental standards and project requirements.
• Establish and verify survey control, perform field measurements and calculations, and assist in the interpretation of survey data.
• Perform quality control reviews of survey data, calculations, coding, and deliverables, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with established standards.
• Prepare and maintain field notes, survey files, project records and related documentation in accordance with departmental procedures.
• Adhere to all applicable health and safety legislation, policies, procedures, traffic protection requirements and safe work practices.
• Prepare for assignments independently, research routine technical issues, and continuously develop technical knowledge and survey expertise.
• Communicate effectively within the survey team and with project stakeholders.

Skills & Qualifications

Essential

• Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology, Geomatics, or a related field.
• Survey Technician candidates must have the minimum experience of a related co-op placement. This is an entry-level position that works under a greater degree of guidance and supervision while developing technical competency, judgment, and independence.
• Survey Instrument Technician candidates must have a minimum of two (2) years of direct surveying experience and are expected to perform survey assignments with a greater degree of technical proficiency, judgment, and independence.
• Certified with, or eligible for certification through, the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT).
• Demonstrated knowledge of survey theory, practices, procedures, and standards.
• Experience operating modern survey equipment including GPS/GNSS receivers, robotic total stations, digital levels, and data collection systems.
• Strong understanding of survey calculations, coordinate systems, elevations, control networks, and field procedures.
• Demonstrated initiative, accountability, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while consistently producing accurate, high-quality work.
• Strong organizational, analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and customer service skills with the ability to work effectively within a team environment.
• Demonstrated commitment to workplace health and safety.

Preferred

• Working knowledge of Carlson Survey software or comparable survey processing software.
• Experience with municipal infrastructure projects.
• Experience supporting engineering design, construction, utility coordination, or asset management initiatives.
• Experience with LiDAR technologies, including terrestrial scanning, mobile mapping or UAV-based data collection and processing.
• Demonstrated interest in emerging survey technologies and professional development.

Working/ Employment Conditions

Working Conditions

• The incumbent will regularly work outdoors in varying weather and environmental conditions including heat, cold, rain, sun exposure, noise, dust, and uneven terrain. Work is performed in active traffic environments, construction sites, rail corridors, utility corridors, treatment facilities, and other operational settings where hazards may be present.
• The position requires the ability to safely perform physical duties including walking long distances, carrying survey equipment and supplies, lifting and moving maintenance hole covers, clearing vegetation, driving stakes, installing survey markers, navigating uneven and challenging terrain, and working safely around live traffic and active construction activities.
• Flexibility in working hours is required, and overtime, early morning, evening, and weekend work may be necessary to support operational requirements.

Employment Conditions

• Valid Ontario Class G Driver's Licence in good standing.
• Ability to operate a Regional vehicle.
• Driver's abstract and proof of licence required upon hire.
• The successful candidate must provide a current and acceptable Criminal Record Check as a condition of employment.
