Field Archaeologist (Calgary)

Your Opportunity

We're expanding our team of field archaeologists and are looking for candidates who are enthusiastic and motivated, with entry‑ to intermediate‑level experience. Our projects span across western Canada and across industries. This opportunity is ideal for candidates who are interested in broadening their archaeological skill set and abilities. We are hiring contract employees with potential for renewal and advancement to regular, full‑time positions for the right candidate. Your Key Responsibilities

Participate in preliminary field reconnaissance surveys and archaeological impact assessments Collect field data Participate in identifying and recording areas of archaeological potential, archaeological sites, and traditional use sites Assist in archaeological monitoring and excavations Maintain field equipment Adhere to company policies and standards Actively participate in Stantec’s HSSE programs Travel and shifts ranging from one day up to 24 days away from home; typical work shifts are 10–14 days, 10‑hour days (overtime eligible). Accommodation and meals/per diems included Operation of a motor vehicle, including pickup trucks and trailering and ATV/UTV use (training provided as needed) Operation of other types of motorized equipment including archaeological power screens (training provided). Some projects include travel in helicopter and small aircraft Working near mobile equipment and heavy machinery Your Capabilities and Credentials

Interest in cultural resource management Willingness to learn identification of archaeological artefacts and features, traditional use sites & features, and culturally modified trees Willingness to learn archaeological geophysics, mapping, pedestrian surveys, subsurface testing, excavation, analog and digital data collection Dedicated to following and promoting a strong safety culture Time management skills that include balancing short‑term and immediate work commitments with varying priorities and deadlines Strong communication skills, including verbal, technical writing, and electronic communications Able to work away from home/stay in hotels or camps for periods of up to 3 weeks and on rotation Desire to work closely with other environmental professionals and Indigenous Nations May be required to pass a drug and alcohol test and maintain that status for the duration of employment based on specific client requirements Safety training will be required, including internal training as well as external training such as First Aid and Ground Disturbance, as well as project‑specific training. Training costs covered by Stantec A valid Class5 driver’s license preferred Able to lift 50lbs and complete physically demanding fieldwork in a range of weather conditions for up to 12hours per day while maintaining a positive, solutions‑focused attitude Education and Experience

A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Archaeology and/or ongoing pursuit of a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Archaeology. Participation in an archaeological field school would be an asset. Additional Information

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
